The Controller is responsible for the management, oversight, and integrity of the hospital’s financial accounting operations. This role ensures compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), healthcare industry regulations, and internal policies while providing accurate, timely financial reporting to support executive decision-making. The Controller leads the accounting team, oversees internal controls, and plays a key role in the hospital’s budgeting, audit, and financial strategy processes.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Financial Accounting & Reporting

- Oversee all general ledger functions, month-end and year-end close processes, and reconciliations.

- Prepare and review accurate and timely financial statements in compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements.

- Ensure proper accounting for hospital revenues, expenses, assets, and liabilities.

- Monitor and analyze financial performance, identifying trends, variances, and areas for improvement. 

Assist with the preparation of the hospital’s cost report.

Compliance & Internal Controls

- Maintain a robust internal control framework to safeguard hospital assets and ensure the integrity of financial data.

- Ensure compliance with federal and state healthcare financial reporting requirements, IRS regulations, and other applicable laws.

- Coordinate with internal and external auditors during annual audits and other reviews.

Budgeting & Forecasting

- Assist the CFO with preparation, monitoring, and management of the hospital’s annual operating and capital budgets.

- Develop financial forecasts and cash flow projections to support strategic planning.

- Provide variance analyses and recommendations for corrective actions when needed.

Cash Management

- Oversee daily cash operations, including bank reconciliations, deposits, disbursements, and investment activities.

- Ensure adequate liquidity for hospital operations and debt service obligations.

Payroll & Accounts Payable Oversight

- Supervise payroll processing, ensuring compliance with labor laws, tax regulations, and internal policies.

- Oversee accounts payable processes to ensure timely and accurate vendor payments.

Team Leadership & Development

- Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team to ensure high performance and professional growth.

- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Collaboration & Advisory Role

- Work closely with department leaders to provide financial guidance and support operational decision-making.

- Assist in evaluating business opportunities, capital investments, and service expansions from a financial perspective.

Qualifications

Education:

- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.

- CPA designation strongly preferred; Master’s degree in Business or Healthcare Administration a plus.

Experience:

- Minimum of 7 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or controller role.

- Prior healthcare or hospital finance experience strongly preferred.

- Proven experience with healthcare reimbursement, cost reporting, and compliance requirements.

Skills & Competencies:

- Strong knowledge of GAAP, healthcare financial reporting standards, and internal control principles.

- Proficiency in accounting software and ERP systems; experience with hospital financial systems preferred.

- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal abilities.

- Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
