The CNC Programmer is responsible for producing precision components by programming, setting up, and optimizing Swiss-type and multi-axis CNC machines to efficiently move parts from development through production while ensuring quality and adherence to specifications.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Adhere to site-specific quality systems, safety protocols, and manufacturing processes.
- Create, edit, and optimize programs for Swiss CNC lathes, vertical mills, and 5-axis machining centers based on engineering drawings and specifications.
- Select appropriate tooling, cutting speeds, feeds, and machining sequences to maximize efficiency and maintain precision.
- Operate multiple machine types, including Swiss-type and multi-axis CNC lathes, manual lathes, and mills, to manufacture precision components.
- Conduct simulations, proof runs, and short production runs to validate programs, setups, and revisions.
- Support operations by performing in-person inspections.
- Maintain tooling inventory.
- Troubleshoot CNC programs and machining processes, collaborating with operators, Engineering, and Quality teams to resolve issues and improve workflows.
- Design, build, and implement machining fixtures to support prototype and production requirements.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives, including tooling optimization, process standardization, and workflow enhancements.
- Communicate effectively with cross-functional teams to maintain production schedules and ensure adherence to quality standards.

Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED required; completion of an accredited apprenticeship or Machinist certificate program preferred.
- 3+ years of advanced CNC programming experience, preferably on Swiss-type and multi-axis lathes.
- Hands-on experience with CNC lathe and mill setup and operations; surface grinding experience is a plus.
- Proficiency in CAD/CAM software (e.g., Mastercam, SolidWorks, GibbsCAM) for machine programming.
- Strong understanding of machining processes, materials, tolerances, and advanced measurement techniques.
- Ability to interpret complex part prints, follow detailed instructions, and utilize various test and measuring equipment.
- Ability to operate multiple machine types, including CNC and manual lathes and mills.
- Familiarity with multi-axis CNC lathes and Swiss-type automatic lathes.
- Commitment to safe work practices and quality standards, including knowledge of ISO requirements for manufacturing.
- Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to optimize machining processes.
- Excellent hand-eye dexterity and the ability to visualize 3D components from 2D drawings.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills; ability to collaborate effectively with operators, engineers, and quality teams.
- Experience in medical device or precision component manufacturing preferred.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Attention to Detail – ability to efficiently and accurately review engineering drawings, verify tolerances, and ensure CNC programs produce precise components with minimal error.
- Technical Expertise – strong understanding of CNC machines, multi-axis turning, tooling, cutting speeds, feeds, and machining materials to create efficient and optimized programs.
- CAD/CAM Proficiency – ability to create, edit, and optimize CNC programs using CAD/CAM software (e.g., Mastercam, SolidWorks, GibbsCAM) while ensuring designs translate accurately to machine code.
- Problem Solving & Analytical – ability to troubleshoot programming challenges, optimize production processes, and implement solutions that reduce scrap, cycle time, and inefficiencies.
- Visualization & Spatial Reasoning – ability to interpret 2D engineering drawings and visualize 3D components to anticipate machining needs and potential issues.
- Quality & Compliance Focus – ability to ensure programs meet strict tolerances, quality standards, and regulatory requirements (ISO/FDA as applicable).
- Collaboration & Team Orientation – highly motivated team player with the ability to work closely with operators, engineers, and quality teams to achieve production goals.
- Communication – able to effectively convey technical information verbally and in writing, provide clear program documentation, and collaborate with cross-functional teams diplomatically and professionally.
- Adaptability & Continuous Learning – ability to quickly learn new software, tools, or machining processes and apply them effectively in a dynamic production environment.
