The American Academy of Dermatology (Academy) is seeking a dynamic and strategic Director, Practice Management to lead our practice management initiatives and portfolio. This role positions the Academy as the premier source for strategies, resources, and tools tailored to dermatologists and their teams—across all practice settings and career stages.

In this leadership role, you will:

  • Provide strategic direction for the practice management area, developing and overseeing a robust portfolio of web content, products, services, educational offerings, and other resources that help practices thrive in a rapidly changing healthcare environment.
    • Guide the Academy’s efforts to anticipate and integrate Augmented Intelligence (AI) into dermatology practice operations, workforce planning, and clinical workflows—ensuring members are prepared for the responsible and effective use of AI-enabled technologies.
    • Collaborate across the Academy to align initiatives with organizational strategy, contributing to policy positions, leadership materials, and reports on key practice issues.
    • Serve as a trusted partner to dermatologists, their staff, and other stakeholders, ensuring AAD’s offerings remain timely, relevant, and impactful.

 Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the design and development of dermatology-specific services and solutions that are the leading source to help dermatologists and their staff with practice management challenges at every career stage. 

 

  • Lead staff in preparing dermatologists for the changing practice environment by developing a portfolio of educational content, tools, resources and services to assist Academy members for optimal practice management.

 

  • Lead the integration of Augmented Intelligence (AI) into AAD’s practice management portfolio, identifying opportunities where AI-enabled tools and technologies can enhance dermatology practice operations, clinical workflows, and workforce optimization.

 

  • Ensure AAD’s practice management content and resources proactively address the evolving role of AI in dermatology, supporting members in understanding, evaluating, and responsibly adopting AI-driven solutions in their practice settings.

 

  • Collaborate with senior management in the assessment and development of strategic and financial goals that relate to the department, product portfolio, and the overall Academy mission.  Develop and execute approved departmental plans targeted to operational plan, business strategies and initiatives. This includes collaboration with Marketing and Communications.

 

  • Utilize qualitative and quantitative methods to analyze use of, and satisfaction with, the practice management content, services, products and resources to ensure that the practice management portfolio is well-utilized and responsive to AAD members and their staffs as a member benefit.   

 

  • Identify and monitor key business trends in the health care environment that may impact dermatology practices, and the specific business needs of dermatology practices, in order to develop related strategies that will enable, prepare and position dermatology to address the challenges and succeed in a changing and evolving health care environment. This includes extensive collaboration with the Advocacy & Policy department.

 

  • Oversee coding and reimbursement guidance for members including submissions to the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) application process and activities with the CPT editorial panel. This includes collaboration between CPT and the Relative Value Scale Update Committee (RUC), which sits under Advocacy & Policy.

 

  • Provide expertise, counsel and guidance in the formation of Academy policy and strategy with respect to the business and management of dermatology practices and practice management and work cross-departmentally to communicate this information.

 

  • Actively engage with related AAD departments around Academy and practice management strategies and goals.  Develop effective, collaborative working relationships to achieve goals.  

 

  • Assist the Vice President, Continuing Professional Education with recommending and determining appropriate strategic and financial goals that relate to the department and the overall Academy mission.   Develop and implement programs to fulfill these goals.   Manage the development of the departmental budget, monitor revenue and expenses and assist with monthly variance reports.  
     

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.  
  • Master’s degree preferred, preferably in business with a healthcare concentration, healthcare management, policy, or health related field. 
  • Minimum 12 years’ experience with physician practice administration and/or health-related/medical association.  
  • Minimum of 8 years of people management including leading, mentoring, and coaching direct and indirect reports.
  • Demonstrated understanding and success in strategic management of physician practice, and in medical specialty societies. 
  • Excellent understanding of the legislative, regulatory, payment, medico-legal, and business environments and their impact on specialty medical/surgical practice.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication.  
  • Demonstrated progressive management skills that include, team building, mentoring, coaching and project management.
