Job Description/Primary Purpose

The primary function of this position is to provide technical expertise in the continuous assessment and improvement of mass spectrometry-based assays and workflows in the clinical laboratory. The Mass Spec Application Engineer III will apply sound knowledge and independent decision making based on experience in sample extraction, chromatography, mass spectrometry, instrumentation operation & design, data acquisition & analysis software, automation and analytical chemistry to provide accurate assessments and optimal solutions in a fast-paced production lab environment.

Essential Functions

Assist in the design, development, optimization and delivery of integrated state-of-the-art mass spectrometry-based high throughput clinical testing solutions.

Assist in the evaluation of the design and performance characteristics of new mass spectrometry instrumentation and equipment for use in the clinical testing production environment.

Performs scientifically sound experiments to solve challenging technical and scientific problems for the Mass Spec DevOps team, and effectively communicates results to internal and external collaborators, interdisciplinary teams and key stakeholders.

Assist in evaluation of new technologies, review of current literature, and implementation of new technologies for the clinical testing lab.

Assist MSDO Developers efforts in making key contributions of scientific and technical expertise, as well as business and industry knowledge, in developing and improving quality control systems and processes for mass spectrometry-based testing in the clinical lab.

Assist in evaluation and implementation of new data processing solutions for mass spectrometry-based testing.

Assist in designing, planning and implementing method development strategies, validations and technical procedures for transfer to the production clinical lab.

Serves as a mentor and trainer for Mass Spec Application Engineer 1’s and 2’s, Specialists and Technicians as necessary.

Assist in the development of protocols for improvement, maintenance and evaluation of mass spectrometry-based tests.

Assist in test evaluation, troubleshooting, process design, development and validation meetings and discussions.

Effectively communicates project progression and any hurdles with team members and other key stakeholders.

Assist in development of new procedures to improve quality, cost and/or labor efficiency.

Demonstrate excellent problem-solving, troubleshooting, and analytical skills for the continuous assessment and improvement of mass spectrometry-based testing.

Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and project management skills to lead process improvement projects in coordination with internal Operations, R&D, and Support Services staff as well as with external vendor technical support and escalation teams.

Serve as technical advisor for best practices regarding mass spectrometry assays and instrumentation for clinical labs.

Gather user requirements, designs and optimizes workflow as needed.

Assists clinical operations or support teams with problem solving in regards to assays and instrumentation.

Serve as technical advisor for validation & verifications for  tests, equipment, instruments and automated protocols and writes SOPs and technical documents as needed.

Prepares for and executes instrument installation, operation, and performance qualifications (IQOQPQ).

Recommends a course of action related to test performance issues and improvements.

Assist the project teams in the cost analysis of new projects, supports capital acquisition, and provides justification for upgrades and additional equipment

Trains staff and works with the lab to develop training modules as necessary

Assist in development of protocols for improvement, maintenance and evaluation of mass spectrometry-based tests.

May lead test evaluation, troubleshooting, process design, development and validation meetings and discussions

Effectively communicates project progression and any hurdles with team members and other key stakeholders.

Develop modifications for current procedures in order to improve cost and/or labor efficiency 

Perform literature review to adequately obtain and access all options for assay improvement as assigned

Physical and Other Requirements

Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.

Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

Mobility: The person in this position needs to occasionally move between work sites and inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.

Communicate: Frequently communicate with others.

PPE: Biohazard laboratory environment that requires use of personal protective equipment in accordance with CDC and OSHA regulations and company policies. 

ARUP Policies and Procedures: To conduct self in compliance with all ARUP Policies and Procedures.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 75 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Fine Motor Control: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.

Vision: Having close, far, and peripheral visual acuity to perform a variety of tasks such as make general observations of depth and distance.
