Summary/Objective
This position will assist MDC’s Sturgeon and Rare Fishes Research Programs with ongoing research and monitoring of Pallid and Shovelnose Sturgeon. Primary responsibilities include being a work-team member during river fish population surveys. Assists research biologist(s) and graduate student(s) with surveys of rivers by use of trawls, nets and electrofishing. Assists research biologist(s) with water quality sampling and lab sample processing. Maintains and modifies equipment including electrofishing and other netting boats. Assists in maintenance of vehicles and outboard motors. Organizes and enters data taken into manageable database files. Occasional field travel and overnight trips are required.
Essential Job Duties
- Assist with research and monitoring of sturgeon through data collection, sample processing, and accurate data entry into data management systems.
- Maintain the accuracy of and availability to information in various databases; prepare summaries and reports as directed.
- Provide limited scientific technical support to researchers, students, managers, administrators, educators, and protection staff.
- Perform general maintenance on tools and equipment and coordinate purchase of replacement or new equipment when necessary.
- Correspond with stakeholders via email, telephone, and in-person discussion.
- Duties will include work in the field, laboratory, and office.
- Occasional field trips and overnight travel are required.
Ancillary Job Duties
Assist with Long Term Resource Monitoring components data collection.
Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- A valid, current driver's license.
- Ability to pass an approved boating safety course and obtain a Missouri Boating Safety Certification Card within 6 months of employment.
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fisheries, Biological Sciences, Zoology or closely related subjects, preferred but not required.
- Experience in scientific research or fisheries management preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to operate boats, outboard motors, land maintenance equipment, power tools and large trucks pulling trailers.
- Attention to detail.
- Ability to adapt to a variety of job situations often involving long hours, hazardous conditions and difficult circumstances.
- Ability to operate various types of hand tools and perform minor mechanical repairs on vehicles and equipment.
- Ability to swim.
- Ability to communicate concisely, both verbal and written.
- Ability to travel and work occasional irregular shift (e.g., early morning, evenings, overnights).
- Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Ability to establish an effective working relationship with Department employees, Federal partners, and University faculty.
- Ability to accurately identify fish using taxonomic keys and other aids.
Work Environment
- Regularly work in outdoor temperatures, including wet, hot, and/or cold environments.
- Occasionally exposed to loud noises which may require the use of hearing protection.
Physical Abilities
- Move about grounds, both inside and outside of buildings.
- Frequently communicate and exchange accurate information.
- Regularly lift up to 50 pounds, correctly lift up to 100 pounds.
- Concentrated attention is required at all times.
- Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
- Ability to alternate between extended periods of desk work and physically demanding fieldwork.
- Ability to move about on varied terrain, including uneven or slippery surfaces.
- Clarity of vision, three-dimensional vision, and precise hand-eye coordination
