    Job Description: 5th–6th Grade Boys Basketball Coach

     

    Position Title: 5th–6th Grade Boys Basketball Coach
    Department: Athletics and Activities
    Location: TMES/TMMS
    Reports To: Athletic Director & Athletic Director Assistant
    Supervises: Student-athletes, student managers, and volunteers
    Employment Status: At-will
    Work Calendar: Seasonal, after school, evenings, and some weekends
    Compensation: Per District Athletic Scale

     

    Position Purpose

     

    Lead and supervise the 5th–6th grade boys basketball program. Teach age-appropriate fundamentals, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Ensure a safe, inclusive, and positive environment that supports student growth, academic responsibility, and pride in Turtle Mountain Community Schools.

     

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

     

    These are the essential duties. This job description does not restrict duties. Other duties may be assigned by the Principal, Assistant Superintendent, and Superintendent.

     
    • Plan and conduct practices that develop fundamental basketball skills, conditioning, and game awareness appropriate for 5th–6th grade students.

    • Teach and model sportsmanship, respect, and culturally responsive team values.

    • Supervise student-athletes at all program activities, including practices, games, travel, locker rooms, and common areas.

    • Emphasize player safety. Follow District procedures for injury response, concussion recognition, return-to-play, hydration, and heat/cold weather guidelines.

    • Communicate schedules, expectations, and team information to families, students, administrators, and staff in a timely and professional manner.

    • Coordinate with the Athletic Director on scheduling, officials, facility use, equipment needs, transportation, and game management.

    • Issue, inventory, and maintain uniforms and equipment. Submit end-of-season reconciliations.

    • Uphold eligibility rules and academic expectations. Encourage regular attendance and positive citizenship.

    • Provide equitable playing opportunities consistent with developmental goals, effort, attendance, and team standards.

    • Ensure compliance with District policies, student handbook, activity codes, and applicable league rules.

    • Arrange for appropriate supervision when the coach cannot be present. Never leave students unsupervised.

    • Report injuries, incidents, and concerns promptly and accurately. Complete required activity and incident reports.

    • Collaborate with other coaches and staff to align philosophy, gyms, and resources. Support multi-sport participation when feasible.

    • Maintain professional boundaries and mandatory reporting responsibilities.

     

    Minimum Qualifications

     
    • High school diploma or equivalent.

    • Successful background check and suitability for working with minors, as required by District policy.

    • Current First Aid and CPR/AED certification or ability to obtain prior to the first practice.

    • Valid driver’s license if transporting students in District vehicles, subject to District approval.

    • Demonstrated knowledge of basketball fundamentals and youth coaching methods.

    • Strong supervision, communication, and relationship-building skills.

     

    Preferred Qualifications

     
    • Prior coaching experience at the youth, middle, or high school level.

    • Relevant coaching coursework or certifications recognized by the District.

    • Experience working with Native American students and communities, with commitment to culturally responsive practices.

    • Current concussion education certificate and student-activity safety training.

     

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

     
    • Ability to plan progressive, developmentally appropriate practices.

    • Skill in positive behavior supports, conflict de-escalation, and equitable team management.

    • Ability to enforce rules consistently and fairly while maintaining rapport with students.

    • Clear, timely communication with students, families, officials, and staff.

    • Reliable recordkeeping for attendance, equipment, injuries, and eligibility.

    • Commitment to inclusivity, academic support, and whole-child development.

     

    Physical Demands and Work Environment

     
    • Frequent standing, walking, running, kneeling, and demonstrating basketball skills.

    • Lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally for equipment and supplies.

    • Indoor gym setting with periods of high noise. Occasional travel on school transportation.

    • Schedule includes after-school practices, evening games, and some weekends.

     

    Terms of Employment

     
    • Extra-duty, seasonal assignment for the 5th–6th grade boys basketball season.

    • Continued employment is contingent on satisfactory performance, program need, student participation levels, and compliance with District policies and training requirements.

     

    Evaluation

     
    • Performance will be evaluated by the Athletic Director in accordance with District procedures for extra-duty personnel.
