GENERAL STATEMENT OF THE FUNCTION

The Assistant Director of Residence Life at Hinds Community College reports directly to the District Director of Housing and Residence Life. The Assistant Director of Residence Life plays a vital role in creating and maintaining a supportive and engaging residential community. This live-on position oversees key administrative functions of the Student Housing Department, including the coordination of major housing operations such as move-in, move-out, room assignments, and facility readiness. In addition, the Assistant Director leads residential life initiatives and participates in the campus-wide on-call rotation to support student safety and well-being.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

A bachelor's degree is required; appropriate coursework in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, College Student Personnel, or related field. Ability to supervise staff, manage selection processes for student and professional staff. Must be able to follow through on multiple and often simultaneous projects and work under time sensitive deadlines.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES, include the following.

  • Maintain confidentiality concerning student information, familiarizing with FERPA, College Policies, and training professional and student staff.
  • Aid students by providing a supportive environment for their intellectual, social, physical, moral, and spiritual development.
  • Assist with staff supervision and contribute to the development of leadership strategies for recruiting, training, and mentoring the residential life team.
  • Meet regularly with the Director of Housing to assist in planning, implementing, and evaluating ongoing activities and review goals and job performance.
  • Oversee the Summer Camps/Conferences program.
  • Serve as the primary architect of a strategic, high-impact Residential Engagement Model, tailored to support first-year and returning students living on campus.
  • Train and support Residence Hall Directors & RA staff in areas including Student Development, Resident Administration, Facilities Management, and Responsibility Education.
  • Support Hall Directors, train Resident Assistants, desk workers, and summer camp counselors.
  • Manage housing software(s) used in the department to enhance daily operations.
  • Serve on campus committees to enhance student life and advise student organizations.
  • Coordinates and approves room changes, private room requests, break housing, and move-in/move-out processes.
  • Conduct weekly building walkthroughs to ensure no safety hazards exist, reporting deficiencies to appropriate departments.
  • Promote good customer service, promptly investigating complaints from residents, parents, and administrators.
  • Act as the department lead in the absence of the Director.
  • Manage daily activities and responsibilities of Residence Hall Directors and develop professional growth plans for each staff member.
  • Maintain knowledge of diversity-related issues, legislation, and best practices.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
