Pay Range: $36.50-$49.91 Hourly

Join the City of Arvada’s Infrastructure Department and help keep our community’s water and wastewater systems running reliably and efficiently. As a SCADA Process Controls Technician, you’ll be at the heart of our operations maintaining, troubleshooting, and improving the complex control systems that monitor and manage vital utilities infrastructure. In this role, you’ll work with cutting-edge technology, from PLC programming and network communications to variable frequency drives and advanced instrumentation. You’ll perform hands-on repairs, calibrations, and upgrades for SCADA/automation systems, ensuring that our facilities operate without interruption. Your work will span the field and the plant, blending technical problem-solving with preventative maintenance and compliance reporting.

Essential Job Functions

  • Performs technical research, analysis, and work to resolve complex technical issues and to keep the Utilities Departments SCADA/Instrumentation and Controls up to date with current technologies.
  • Utilizes a variety of diagnostic equipment including but not limited to; multi-tester (volt/ohm meters), mega Ohm/insulation tester, data loggers, thermal imaging devices, 4-20 mA loop calibrators, HART communicators, differential pressure transmitter calibrators, lap top computer and other component testers.
  • Performs and on occasion leads coworkers in the maintenance, repair, calibrations and troubleshooting of all equipment, variable frequency drives, MCCs, software, SCADA, network, remote communication systems and process control systems utilized by the Utilities Department.
  • Performs all aspects of the OT systems SCADA/Controls/Communications systems, including backups/updates, basic programing, troubleshooting, configurations, repairs and electrical.
  • Performs routine preventative maintenance and testing on electrical aspects of motors, motor control centers, drives and other electrical equipment.
  • Performs and creates automated/manual generated computer reports for state and federally mandated water analyses and other reports as needed utilizing historian data. Maintains and writes detailed documents on work, changes, and SOPs.
  • Prepares and updates documentation and records including calibration, preventative maintenance, equipment test results, manuals, and as-built drawings.
  • Communicates with supervision and/or coworkers on system needs and assignments, Informs Management and/or Supervision of systems repair and inventory needs.
  • Utilizes appropriate personal protective equipment for self and co-workers, follows city’s safety procedures and policies.
  • Responds to emergency situations, whether in the regular workday or afterhours. Participates on afterhours call schedule for Plant and field EMT/SCADA related issues. Responds internal customer concerns/requests promptly, provides effective services or solutions for customers. Demonstrating a respectful attitude towards customers co-workers.
  • Frequently operates a personal or City-owned motor vehicle to drive to and from work locations throughout the City.

  • Works towards advanced knowledge and increased abilities for all aspects of position.
  • Performs all duties of the Electro-Mechanical Technician position as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of flagging, signing and coning procedures, city traffic control standards, city engineering specifications.
  • knowledge of state and federal drinking water regulations, and the ability to cover plant operators shifts when needed.
  • Solid Working knowledge of Utilities, Water Treatment, Water System Operations, Wastewater Collection principles, operations, and maintenance of systems, including the equipment and programs used to operate and maintain these systems, and pumping systems and associated hydraulics factors.
  • Proficient knowledge of networking, computer hardware and software with ability perform PLC/SCADA programming and to maintain record systems. Develops database applications.
  • Proficient Knowledge of city safety policies and procedures.
  • Proficient knowledge of electrical control systems and instrumentation.
  • Experienced in reading blueprints, electrical schematics, and maps.
  • Experienced in mechanical and electrical modification /repair of system equipment.
  • Working knowledge and ability in the use, tuning and development of PID controls.
  • Ability to exercises initiative, judgment and make decisions within the scope of assigned authority.
  • Ability to effectively communicate information, both verbally and in writing, to support organizational objectives and interact with all levels of personnel within the city in a positive and cooperative manner.
  • Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.



License & Certification

  • State of Colorado Water Distribution
    Class I Certification or Water Treatment
    Class D Certification.
    Railroad certification.
    Flagging certification.
  • Valid CDL Class A.
  • A valid Colorado driver’s license and acceptable driving record is required.


Education Degree

  • High School/GED

SCADA Process Controls Technician I


Work Experience Related

  • Five (5) years of experience in utilities or public works infrastructure or construction, and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience as an electro-mechanical technician (or equivalent instrumentation and controls technician.)

SCADA Process Controls Technician II

Work Experience Related

  • Five (5) years of experience in utilities or public works infrastructure or construction, and five (5) years of progressively responsible experience as a SCADA technician I (or equivalent progressively responsible instrumentation and controls technician experience.)


Education Required

  • Yes


Other Qualifications

  • Completion of courses required for the Electro Mechanical Technician, plus the following:
  • Unity Pro PLC Programming course.
  • Proficy HMI/SCADA iFix fundamentals course.
  • Proficy Historian Fundamentals course.
  • Two (2) years of in house training.
  • 80-hours of Plant Operation experience.

Physical Demands

  • Strenuous to extreme physical effort that includes frequent use of heavy objects (e.g., 50+ pounds) and may also use heavy tools or require strenuous application in awkward positions.


Hazards

  • Occasional hazards that are predictable or well protected against (Hazardous waste, ladders, cleaning supplies, trips and falls).


Work Environment

  • Regular exposure to heat and noise along with working outside in the elements.

The City of Arvada does not offer benefits to temporary and/or seasonal employees.  Temporary, Variable Hour and Health Plan Eligible employees will earn 1 hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked, up to a maximum cap of 48 hours.
