QUALIFICATION: This position requires knowledge of correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation; general needs and behavior of high school students; proper office method; procedures including receptionist and telephone techniques, filing systems, maintenance and reporting functions; computer software necessary to complete assigned tasks; requires knowledge of minority cultures and heritage as well as knowledge of the local community and the various services available to the migrant and minority community.

This position requires the skill to understand and follow both oral and written instructions in an independent manner; read and write at a sufficient level for successful performance of required duties; must have the skills to learn specific procedures and operations and effectively apply them to work situations; type accurately at a minimum speed of 40 net wpm; operate standard office machines, computer terminals and designated audio-visual equipment; effectively and tactfully communicate both orally and in written forms (with fluency in foreign language helpful); plan and organize required activities according to stated policies and objectives; persuade and motivate individuals and groups; prepare and maintain a variety of accurate reports and complete records; learn and utilize District computer systems and local site computer systems/unit.

Applicant must possess the ability to type letters and reports regarding credits, competency requirements and senior status; assist senior counselor in contacting local scholarship sources and in testing preparation and administration. Assist counselors and administration in handling attendance and minor discipline referrals through home contacts; credit checks and notification of students and parents on graduation status; certain types of student programming and programming changes; notification of parents of student shortages in units or on proficiency tests; new student registration and orientation; providing basic information on college requirements and related matters; evaluation of student career interests, aptitudes, objectives and choices; interpretation of District goals and objectives to students, parents and community; plan and organize required activities according to stated policies and objectives; persuade and motivate individuals and groups; establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.

This position requires the ability to assist in planning, implementing, and evaluating the parent community involvement programs; contact various local community service agencies to explain migrant and other programs, analyze family school needs, and to learn what services are available in school and community; participate in District parent involvement activities; establish and maintain records of activities, home visits, meetings, and prepare necessary reports; work with minority students to enhance academic performance and extra-curricular participation; participate in District Community Advisor meeting as necessary; perform related duties as required.

Completion of twelfth grade, preferably supplemented with some college level courses in counseling or guidance.

Two years of general clerical experience, preferably supplemented with some college-level courses in counseling/guidance of students.

Successful applicant must possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License. Completion of the twelfth grade is required, preferably supplemented by college level courses in the areas of sociology and school/community relations. Successful experience and first-hand knowledge in working with minority groups is required.

A RECENT FIVE MINUTE TYPING CERTIFICATE MUST ACCOMPANY APPLICATION TO BE SUCCESSFUL. Certificates must be less than two years old and cannot be completed through an online website.   Kern High School District employees who currently work in a position requiring the same or higher minimum typing speed do not need to submit a typing certificate.

A CRIMINAL HISTORY CHECK WILL BE REQUIRED OF THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE PRIOR TO EMPLOYMENT. AS WELL AS A CURRENT COPY OF DMV DRIVING RECORD.

DUTIES OF POSITION:  Assist counselors and administration in the performance of a variety of complex and responsible clerical duties in support of the day-to-day operations of the counseling/guidance service. Employees in the position receive general to limited supervision from the Head of Guidance and/or from a school site administrator within a broad framework of policies and procedures. This position performs a specialized support service within the guidance program and functions at a level of independence that requires a high degree of proficiency, initiative and demonstrably proven abilities. Acts as a liaison between migrant program, minorities, schools, migrant and minority parents, and community services. This job classification is responsible for providing information and communication links with minority groups and must exercise initiative and possess communication skills in foreign languages.

STARTING SALARY:                 $3,486.59 (monthly)

NUMBER OF MONTHS:             10 (to begin as soon as possible)

NUMBER OF HOURS:                8 (daily working hours 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)
