About the Department

Central San, a progressive public utility, is seeking a Household Hazardous Waste Technician I/II. This position will perform a variety of tasks in handling of hazardous materials from both households and conditionally exempt small quantity generators at the District's Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility.

Eligible to apply for advancement to the level II position ($3,890.99- $4,707.71 biweekly) after 18 months.

Typical duties include:

  • Identifying waste for segregation, packaging, bulking, and transportation per Federal, State, and local laws and regulations.
  • Performing site set up, clean up, facility maintenance, inventory, routine inspection, and bulking, unloading, and lab packing hazardous waste.
  • Responding to spills or releases of hazardous materials.
  • Operating equipment including trucks, forklifts, pumps, generators, compactors, and pressure washers.
  • Responding to inquires and providing information to the public.

Position Duties

Education:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.

Experience:

Household Hazardous Waste Technician I: One (1) year of full-time experience performing duties related to the collection and disposal of hazardous waste.

Household Hazardous Waste Technician II: Three (3) years of full-time experience performing duties related to the collection and disposal of hazardous waste.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Successful completion of the following:

    • Annual physical examination

    • Forty (40) hours’ training in Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) 29 CFR 1910.120.

    • Eight (8) hours of current annual HAZWOPER refresher training in compliance with regulations.

    • Eight (8) hours of annual cardio pulmonary resuscitation and first aid training and certification.

    • Thirty-two (32) hours of Haz Cat certification training.

    • Department of Transportation training 49CFR - HM126, HM181 and HM232.

    • Forklift Operator’s training and certification.

Minimum Qualifications

The most qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the examination process. Human Resources shall determine the examination steps to be used for this recruitment. The steps may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, practical examination, application screening, and/or oral board examination. One or more of these steps may be used and in any order. At the end of the testing process, candidates passing all of the examination steps will have their names placed on an eligibility list. The list is valid for six months and may be extended up to an additional six months at the request of the hiring department. The list may be used to fill future positions in the classification.

Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement to the examination process. All applicants will be notified of the results of the review process.

Successful candidates not currently employed in regular status by the District must pass a pre-employment physical examination to be considered for appointment.
