About the Department
The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of unskilled to semi-skilled manual labor tasks and duties within the Cemetery division. Employees in this class perform various types of work and tasks required during the performance of cemetery grounds and/or facility maintenance. Employee may occasionally operate non-specialized equipment in connection with tasks or perform other related work as required.
This job works under close to general supervision according to set procedures but determines how or when to complete tasks.
Position Duties
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
- Performs a variety of unskilled to semi-skilled manual labor tasks on cemetery grounds and related facilities.
- Loads and unloads stone, gravel, and dirt; assist with loading heavy equipment onto trailers.
- Rakes and collects grass, leaves, bush trimmings, brush, etc.; mows lawns and cleans grounds.
- Assists equipment operator with digging and backfilling graves.
- Assists skilled tradesman by carrying materials, tools and equipment.
- Performs related work as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Knowledge of cemetery policies, procedures and ordinances.
- Knowledge of cemetery grounds and facilities maintenance.
- Knowledge of the methods, equipment and principles used in landscape and turf maintenance.
- Knowledge of the safe use and operation of grounds maintenance equipment assigned, including daily preventive maintenance requirements.
- Skill in the operation and use of mowing equipment and other landscaping tools and equipment.
- Skill in the use of grounds maintenance tools and equipment assigned.
- Ability to perform strenuous manual labor.
- Ability to understand and follow specific instructions, both oral and written.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.
- Ability to respond courteously to citizens.
Other Qualifications
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- High School Graduation or GED equivalent.
- Two years of landscaping, horticulture, maintenance or related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
- Performs heavy work that involves constantly lifting, shoveling, and carrying 35 to 50 pounds on a regular and recurring basis and exerting 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS (WORK ENVIRONMENT):
Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
- Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
- Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.
- Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.
