About the Department

The Adjunct Instructor, (Adult Basic Education, ABE) is a part-time, non-benefited position that provides instruction in foundational academic skills—including reading, writing, mathematics, and digital literacy—to adult learners seeking to improve their educational levels. The instructor helps prepare students for high school equivalency tests, postsecondary education, or entry into workforce training programs. The instructor creates a student-centered, inclusive learning environment and adapts instruction to meet diverse learning needs.

Compensation:$23.19/hour.

Priority Screening Date: Position is open until filled.

Starting Date: Fall/2025. Position filled on an as needed basis.

Position Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: – this position is non-exempt and is eligible for compensatory or overtime pay provisions of the FLSA.  This listing of essential duties is not all-inclusive, but representative, other duties may be assigned).
Teaching and Learning: Employs student-centered instruction coupled with the development and use of appropriate and current educational materials. Consistently and promptly responds to student inquiries and shares timely, appropriate, and instructive feedback and evaluation of student work. 

  • Maximizes student engagement and success by employing methods that develop student understanding of the values, practices, and procedures within the designated discipline, and by engaging students in interdisciplinary practices to develop 21st-century learners.
  • Prepares and delivers assigned courses by employing high-impact teaching practices in a learning environment that promotes respect and rapport.
  • Facilitates student achievement by maintaining clear expectations and defined learning outcomes.
  • Promotes learning through the innovative implementation of effective classroom technologies.
Competency-Based Design: Applies competency-based design to the development of curriculum, engaging with colleagues at the course, program, and institutional level with the aim of continuous improvement.
  • Evaluates student engagement and success through formative and summative assessment.
  • Develops curriculum by articulating measurable, student-centered learning outcomes, and using competency-based design strategy to maintain curriculum that is current, effective, and relevant to the designated discipline.
  • Contributes to curricula by assisting in design, implementation, and review aligned with current or emerging community, state, or national needs.
  • Participates in continuous improvement of student learning and success by gathering data, analyzing data, engaging with peers and internal and external stakeholders, and implementing change as a result.
Professionalism: Collaborates and actively reflects on responsibilities to positively contributes to one’s discipline, Pathway, the College, and the greater community.
  • Maintains professionalism by embodying the values, ethics, and behavior codes of LCCC and one’s discipline.
  • Demonstrates social competence and effective communication in professional and academic venues.
  • Actively contributes to the college and ones’ Pathway, department, or designated discipline by engaging in expanding institutional connections and professional development, and by displaying commitment to the profession.
Other responsibilities may be assigned based on contemporary institutional needs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge

  • Adult Learning Theory: Understanding of andragogy, adult learning styles, and strategies for adult engagement.
  • College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS): Knowledge of academic content standards in reading, writing, and mathematics for adult learners.
  •  Assessment Tools: Familiarity with diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments commonly used in ABE programs (e.g., TABE, CASAS).
  • Instructional Strategies: Knowledge of effective, research-based instructional practices for multi-level, diverse classrooms.
  • Cultural Competency: Awareness of the social, cultural, and economic challenges facing adult learners and the ability to address these in the learning environment.
  •  High School Equivalency Preparation: Understanding of content and strategies relevant to GED® and HiSET® exams.

Skills

  • Classroom Instruction: Ability to plan and deliver effective lessons in reading, writing, math, and/or digital literacy.
  • Differentiation: Skill in adapting instruction for learners at different skill levels and with various learning needs.
  • Technology Integration: Proficiency in using digital tools (e.g., Google Workspace, Zoom, learning management systems) to support instruction and learning.
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills to clearly explain concepts and provide feedback.
  • Classroom Management: Ability to manage classroom dynamics and maintain a positive, respectful learning environment.
  • Data Management: Skill in tracking and reporting attendance, progress, and assessment results accurately and in a timely manner.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:
  • While performing the essential duties of this position, an employee would frequently be required to move around the assigned work areas as well as within hallways, meeting rooms, and other parts of the campus facilities.
  • There may be multiple/daily instances of prolonged sitting, standing, and personal computer use, which would include keyboard and/or mouse usage as well as viewing a computer monitor
  • An employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
  • The overall work environment requires the mental ability to shift focal point quickly due to interruptions; an employee must be able to mentally track multiple projects and tasking as well.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, there may be instances of somewhat loud environments.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Adult Education, English, Math, or a related field.
  • One or more years of teaching experience, preferably with adult learners.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Education, Adult Education, or a related field.
  • Experience preparing students for high school equivalency tests (GED®, HiSET®).
  • Experience with College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS).
  • Teaching license or ABE endorsement 
  • Experience with data reporting systems such as LACES.

Other Qualifications
