About the Department

Leads a team of skilled work under the direction of the Carpentry Supervisor in the construction, maintenance and repair of interiors and exteriors of buildings, furniture, equipment and other wooden structures; work includes moving, installation, and setup of Modular Classroom Trailers and any associated work, including the capability of driving equipment to move Modular Classroom Trailers on VDOT roadways; oversees the construction of signage; the paint crew, mobile repair, welder, glaziers and roofers.  Work is performed under general supervision and requires coordination with others as necessary.  The position is a working lead and this position is required to perform quality inspection of work completed by trades workers and to assist with trades jobs as required.

Position Duties

Essential Job Functions:

  • Under the direction of the Carpentry Supervisor, assists with oversight of trades workers activities:

    • Constructs, installs, repairs, replaces, maintains, and alters doors, steps, tables, partitions, wooden sports equipment, furniture, paneling, and other wooden structures. 

    • Designs and constructs cabinets, shelves, and closets.

    • Designs and constructs or modifies existing structures to accommodate the disabled in compliance with applicable federal and state statutes, regulations, and guidelines.  

    • Performs emergency repairs.

    • Refinishes damaged structures and furniture, including damaged sheetrock.

    • Maintains equipment used, including trucks, vans and equipment related to the movement of modular classrooms.

    • Sets block, installs tires, reads tape measures and 4 foot levels, joins modular classrooms.

    • Painting of schools 

    • Installation and repair of glass

    • Inspects roofs regularly for leaks and damage.

    • Locates and identifies problems.  

    • Performs emergency repairs to roofs and skylights.

    • Installs, maintains and repairs skylights, gutters, downspouts and other sheet metal structures; installs metal flashing

    • Works with other maintenance workers, school officials and staff to resolve maintenance problems.

  • Works with other maintenance workers, school officials, and staff to resolve maintenance problems.

  • Assists the Carpentry Supervisor in establishing and executing preventive maintenance program

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Budgetary Responsibility:  

Provides and verifies invoices in a timely manner.  Adheres to county spending guidelines.  


Report Preparation:  

Provides written reports that support the evaluation of the department and trades workers.


Equipment Operation

Must demonstrate skill in use of equipment pertaining to carpentry.


Contacts:   

Facility Services personnel, Facility Services administrators, Facility Services office staff, and office staff and administrators from individual schools.  Occasional contact with vendors, building inspectors, contract workers.


Work Direction/Supervision:  
Receive both written and verbal requests for work to be done.  Leads a team of carpenters, masons, modular technicians, painters, glazier, welder and roofers.


Decision Making:  

Frequent independent decision-making concerning problem solving as it relates to carpentry.

Physical Demands

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to use a telephone, to enter data into a computer terminal; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal indoor levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly; physical agility to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.  


Work Environment
While performing the duties of this position, the employee regularly works in an office environment.  The noise level in the work environment is quiet.  Other duties of this position require working outdoors in various weather and lighting conditions.

Minimum Qualifications

Considerable knowledge of practices and methods of woodworking, cabinetmaking, and construction.  Knowledge of building and fire codes.  Knowledge of mathematics computations related to construction and design.  Ability to design and construct building interiors and exteriors, and construct/repair furniture, small structures and buildings.  Demonstrated ability to work with various types of woods and structural components.  Ability to maintain and service equipment.  Ability to work safely and efficiently with various types of equipment, machinery, and tools.   Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.  Basic computer and keyboarding skills.

Other Qualifications

A minimum of 5 years’ experience in carpentry in a commercial or school environment or at least 5 years of construction experience in a trades-to-leadership capacity.  Any equivalent combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform this job.  Valid VA Driver’s License and a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or be able to obtain the CDL  within one year of the hire date. This position requires the incumbent to drive. In accordance with Policy 5431, an employee who occupies the position and is assigned a district-owned or leased motor vehicle will be subject to annual driving checks and must maintain acceptable records pursuant to the standards set forth in the policy.
