Position Overview:
This position is responsible for preparing and applying asphaltic materials on job sites and may serve as the lead person on patching crews as required. Work includes being responsible for the finished product, the coordination of the other crew members, and enforcing proper safety and traffic precautions.Position Duties
- Sets up traffic control at the job site by safety policies and practices.
- Distributes hot asphaltic road-building binder and topping over road surfaces by raking and combing material to correct thickness.
- Rakes asphalt to bring the surface to the proper grade and required contour of the street.
- Tamps and smoothest joints, gutters, connections, road patches, and related areas so asphaltic mixtures will properly adhere, conform to old surfaces, correct surface defects, and provide proper drainage.
- Finishes surfaces by smoothing and tamping asphalt surfaces inaccessible to a roller.
- Operates jackhammer, compressor, extruder, ground pounder, and related equipment.
- Repairs utility cuts (water, gas, City Light, and private contractors) by removing temporary material and replacing it with permanent hot asphaltic material.
- Performs other related duties of a comparable level/type as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualification: One year experience in hot asphalt construction, maintenance and repair.
OR Combinations of education, training, and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability.
Desired Qualifications:
- Four years’ experience in hot asphalt construction, maintenance, and repair.
- Experience raking asphalt to the proper surface, proper grade, and contour of the street.
- Experience tamps and smooth, gutters, connections, road patches, and related areas so asphaltic mixtures will properly adhere, conform to old surfaces, correct surface defects, and provide proper drainage.
- Experience distributing hot asphaltic road-building binder and topping over road surfaces by raking and combing material to correct thickness.
License, Certification, and Other Requirements
- Current Washington State drivers' license.
Work Environment/Physical Demands
- Work is performed around heavy equipment and heavy power tools require strenuous physical exertion and often involves working around heavy traffic, extreme weather, loud noises from machinery, dust, and the heat and fumes of asphaltic material.

The full salary range for this position is $37.03 - $39.87 per hour.
