At the San Francisco SPCA, our Community Medicine team is on the front lines of making veterinary care accessible to all. Every patient we help—and every client we support—means one more animal stays healthy, safe, and with the person who loves them.
We’re looking for a Veterinary Assistant who is not only skilled in-patient care, but also thrives in a fast-paced, efficient, and team-focused environment. In this role, you’ll be part of a high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter and wellness program, where your expertise and organization directly translate into more pets receiving the care they need.
What You’ll Do:
- Provide hands-on care from patient intake to discharge—surgical prep, anesthesia monitoring, recovery, and follow-up.
- Assist veterinarians with treatments and procedures, always prioritizing safety, compassion, and efficiency.
- Keep your work area clean, organized, and fully stocked so care never slows down.
- Communicate clearly and respectfully with clients, giving them the information they need to care for their pets.
- Safely handle and restrain animals of all temperaments, using low-stress techniques.
- Maintain accurate records so every patient’s care is documented and every handoff is smooth.
Requirements
What You Bring:
- Experience as a veterinary assistant; high-volume spay/neuter or shelter background is a plus.
- Confidence in anesthesia monitoring, patient handling, and treatment protocols.
- A commitment to efficiency without compromising care—because every saved minute can help another pet.
- The ability to work collaboratively in a mission-driven, high-energy environment.
- A belief in the power of accessible veterinary care to change lives—for animals and people alike.
Why Join Us:
When you work here, you’re not just caring for animals, you’re part of a movement to make veterinary care accessible and equitable in our city. We offer:
- Competitive pay based on experience.
- Full benefits for full-time team members, including medical, dental, vision, PTO, and retirement.
- Discounts on veterinary care, retail, and pet supplies.
- A team that values compassion, skill, and the drive to make every patient count.
Salary:
Starting hourly wage is $28.00 - $32.00 / hour depending on the depth and breadth of experience.
