About the Department
The City of Lake Oswego Parks & Recreation Department is seeking Head Lifeguards for the Lake Oswego Recreation and Aquatic Center (LORAC). We are looking for self-motivated candidates to join our on-call, part-time staff. The ideal candidate will possess an outgoing personality, a positive attitude, leadership skills, and excellent verbal and written communication skills.
The Position: The Head Guard will primarily assist in organizing, planning, and managing all aquatic programs under the supervision of the Aquatics Supervisor and Recreation Aquatics Specialist. Responsibilities include supervising part-time lifeguards and swim instructors, and ensuring a safe and positive aquatic environment at LORAC for all members.
HOURS: This is a year-round position, up to 20 hours per week at the LORAC. Hours are typically between 5am to 9:30pm Monday through Friday and 6:30am to 6pm Saturdays and 7:30am 6:30pm on Sundays.
Position Duties
- Create a safe environment for all LORAC patrons, both swimmers and other guests, maintaining constant surveillance of patrons in the facility.
- Perform rescues and administer emergency care and assessment as trained and necessary. Initiate or participate in a coordinated, team approach to manage incidents.
- Provide on-site leadership of lifeguard team in cooperation with Aquatics Supervisor and Recreation Aquatics Specialist.
- Assists with trainings, personal and professional development, encourages and motivates employees to enhance individual skills, promote professional growth and maximize staff.
- Monitors compliance with applicable federal, state and local regulations, accrediting commissions, and licensing requirements.
- Oversees logistics of day-to-day facility operations, such as: equipment safety checks, opening and closing of facility, scheduling on-site breaks and rotations for guard staff, overseeing programming, and keeping attendance records.
- Take pool chemical checks and help maintain pool chemistry.
- Perform custodial maintenance of the LORAC.
- Interact professionally with customers, staff and general public.
Minimum Qualifications
- Current American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguarding certification (if not currently certified, please reach out for upcoming classes).
- Current ARC Water Safety Instructor certification preferred.
- Prior lifeguarding experience.
- Prior swim lesson experience preferred.
- Experience leading staff in recreation and/or aquatics setting preferred.
- Demonstrate leadership, organizational and customer service skills.
- Ability to communicate professionally and efficiently (verbal and written).
- Ability to pass a water/swim skills test.
- Minimum age: 18
