Qualifications for a Police Officer I – Grade 15 - $ 51,861.75 - $ 78,920.09

Education and Experience: 

High school diploma: prior experience in law enforcement is desired; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  

Special Qualifications: 

  • Possession of a valid Driver’s License to operate a motor vehicle. Requirements may exist at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment.  
  • Possess a General or Probationary Law Enforcement Certificate awarded by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission. 
  • Must meet and maintain all minimum and local training and education requirements for the position and maintain sufficient physical and mental conditioning to perform the work of a police officer. 

Additional Considerations: 

  • Must meet “Achieved Standards” or better on most recent annual evaluation. 
  • All college degrees must be conferred by a Regionally Accredited Educational Institution. 
  • Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET), Mandatory In-service Training, and Roll Call Training do not satisfy the training requirements for career progression. 
  • LEO Service is defined as any state, county, municipal, or company police service as recognized by North Carolina Criminal Justice, Training and Standards Commission. 

 

Qualifications for a Police Officer II- Grade 16 - $ 54,454.83 - $ 82,866.10

Education and Experience: 

High school diploma; and three (3) years of experience in a responsible position of law enforcement; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.   

Special Qualifications: 

  • Possession of a valid Driver’s License to operate a motor vehicle.  Requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment.  
  • Possess a General Law Enforcement Certificate awarded by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission. 
  • Completion of at least 100 hours of Law Enforcement continuing education. 
  • Must meet and maintain all minimum and local training and education requirements for the position and maintain sufficient physical and mental conditioning to perform the work of a police officer.

Qualifications for a Police Officer III- Grade 17 - $ 57,177.58 - $ 87,009.40

Education and Experience: 

High school diploma; and eight (8) years of experience in a responsible position in law enforcement and supervision; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  

Special Qualifications: 

  • Possession of a valid Driver’s License to operate a motor vehicle. Requirements may exist at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment.  
  • Possess an Intermediate or Advanced Level Law Enforcement Certificate awarded by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission. 
  • Law enforcement instructor certification from the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission is preferred. 
  • 500 hours of Law Enforcement continuing education (400 hours with AA degree, 300 hours with BA/BS degree). 
  • Must meet and maintain all minimum and local training and education requirements for the position and maintain sufficient physical and mental conditioning to perform the work of a police officer. 

Additional Considerations: 

  • Must meet “Achieved Standards” or better on most recent annual evaluation. 
  • All college degrees must be conferred by a Regionally Accredited Educational Institution.

Education and Experience: 

High school diploma; and fifteen (15) years of experience in a highly responsible position of law enforcement and supervision; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  

Special Qualifications: 

  • Possession of a valid Driver’s License to operate a motor vehicle. Requirements may exist at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment.  
  • Possess an Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate awarded by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission. 
  • Law enforcement instructor certification from the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission. 
  • 1000 hours of Law Enforcement continuing education (750 hours with AA degree, 500 hours with BA/BS degree). 
  • Must meet and maintain all minimum and local training and education requirements for the position and maintain sufficient physical and mental conditioning to perform the work of a police officer.
