DEFINITION: Responsible for performing technical duties in the maintenance and repair of the water distribution system. Maintains and updates all water and sewer utility records, transfers new water lines and information to base maps and GIS system corresponding with City Engineers.
REPORTS TO: The Water Distribution Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions.
Position Duties
- Flushes City fire hydrants; obtains accurate water pressure and flow information; maintains related records.
- Answers customer complaints concerning dirty water or low pressure.
- Assists in locating water leaks.
- Supervises seasonal personnel in weed-eating and in painting fire hydrants.
- Updates Base Map and GIS corresponding with City Engineers.
- Assist Customers and Contractors.
- Locates utilities, leak detection and collects water samples.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Three (3) years experience in a related field.
- Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain an appropriate state-certified license for C- Distribution.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain an appropriate and valid Class B- CDL driver’s license.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Water Distribution Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include City policies and procedures, state laws guiding the location of underground utilities, and safety guidelines and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related technical duties. Heavy traffic and inclement weather contribute to the complexity of the work.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to provide technical support for system operation. Success in this position contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of system operations.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with other City personnel, engineers, inspectors, contractors, and members of the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is heavy work which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:
- Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
- Handling: Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand
- Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination sound.
- Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
- Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
- Speaking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely.
- Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.
- Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
- Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
- Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
