JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Assistant Director for New Student Programs works closely with the Office of Student Success leadership team and academic program leadership to implement institutional retention and student satisfaction strategies focused on the period from admission through the first year, including planning and deployment of the institutional new student orientation. This position facilitates a seamless transition for new students into their program by helping students navigate and connect with a wide range of university resources and support services. The Assistant Director coordinates with Health Sciences Ambassadors and service providers on campus, including colleges and programs, to enhance student recruitment and engagement.
Responsibilities
- Participates in the development and implementation of the yearly institutional outreach plan, including travel to conferences, health profession career fairs, community colleges, and four-year institutions.
- Acts as a central recruiter for UT Health Science Center at national, regional, and local recruitment events, both virtual and in-person.
- Communicates with potential and current applicants utilizing various platforms, including phone calls, email, text, and virtual meetings.
- Maintains local, regional, and national contacts for recruitment.
- Develops programming and events to build community and a sense of connection to UT Health Science Center.
- Serves as the primary liaison for new students, offering personalized support and guidance from admission through the first year.
- Assists students in navigating university resources, including academic coaching, counseling services, health and wellness programs, and extracurricular activities, as well as discipline-specific services provided within colleges and programs.
- Maintains regular communication with new students to address questions, concerns, and needs, ensuring a positive and supportive experience.
- Develops and implements campus-wide orientation programs, workshops, and events designed to welcome and integrate new students into the university community.
- Stay informed about best practices in new student programs and higher education, incorporating innovative approaches to enhance student success and retention.
- Performs other duties as required.
Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)
EXPERIENCE: Four (4) years of experience assisting with recruitment, orientation, or providing new member support in non-profit, higher education, or in a related field; OR Master’s Degree and two (2) years of experience assisting with recruitment, orientation, or providing new member support in non-profit, higher education, or in a related field.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to effectively utilize computer software application skills such as MS Office.
- Ability to effectively leverage social media and other similar communication platforms.
- Knowledge through experience in effective methods of recruiting and engaging the community and the target population for the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.
- Ability to communicate effectively using verbal and written methods.
- Ability to prepare impactful reports with well-defined metrics and consequences.
- Ability to plan, assign, and/or supervise the work of others.
- Skill in managing one's own time and the time of others.
