About the Department

Plans, creates, implements, and monitors all marketing strategies and campaigns for divisions within the Arts & Entertainment Department. Primary focus areas include the venues and activities for the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts (BCPA) and Grossinger Motors Arena. Supervises graphic design projects including the development of Internet sites and a variety of electronic and print publications. Maximizes visibility, attendance, and revenue for all Department programs and events and creates a strong image of all divisions regionally and nationally. Ensures a well-informed and active public to support all department activities. Work is reviewed under broad policy direction of the Director. 

Position Duties

This list may not include all tasks and/or knowledge which may be expected of the employee, nor does it cover all specific duties which may be required. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Creates and implements both season and individual event marketing plans, budgets and strategies for the BCPA and Grossinger Motors Arena and other department programs and facilities.
  • Creates and maintains Web page and all other electronic marketing materials including coordinating graphic design projects, including playbills, social media, advertisements, mailings, and flyers.
  • Creates and places all paid advertising, both print and broadcast, for the Department, staying within respective budgets for these items.
  • Composes, edits and issues press releases and public service announcements for the department.
  • Researches, analyzes and monitors community demographics in order to capitalize on marketing opportunities.
  • Assists in fundraising activities, including identifying potential event sponsors and staffing development activities.
  • Serves as staff liaison to media and civic organizations representing and promoting the department events and programs
  • Develops and executes effective Digital Marketing plans on social media platforms and proprietary platforms.
  • Cultivates working relationships with arena tenants and show partners for both the arena and BCPA.

Minimum Qualifications

General Skill Levels

Knowledge of:

  • Marketing and communications mechanisms used by non-profit arts operations.
  • Word processing, spreadsheets, internet, e-mail software and other applications as needed by the department.
  • Principles of supervision, training, coaching and mentoring.

Skills in:

  • Communicating clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Creative design and use of a variety of media for publicity and promotion.
  • Organizing work, setting priorities, meeting critical deadlines, and following up on assignments with minimum direction.
  • Using tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines.
  • Preparing clear and concise reports, correspondence and other written materials.
  • Using arithmetic and basic descriptive statistics as applicable to this position.

Ability to:

  • Apply marketing and communication knowledge in integrated, multi-channel promotional efforts.
  • Analyze, organize and plan the needs of the season an individual event marketing campaigns.
  • Train and supervise subordinate personnel
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with external agencies and patrons, subordinates, peers and supervisors
  • Exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions
  • Give verbal and written instructions.
  • Direct, appraise and discipline staff in a respectful and constructive manner.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, public relations, advertising, arts management or related field
  • 4 years of progressively responsible experience in marketing and communication in a non-profit arts organization or Master’s degree in related field plus 2 years of like experience.
  • Graphic design training or experience is highly desired.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work is performed in office environment, performing arts facility, or at other departmental division sites including outdoor events. Work may require travel between work sites in town and frequently to other locations for meetings. Work will require occasional availability for performances in the evenings and weekends.
