About the Department

MUST BE A CURRENT, REGULAR EMPLOYEE OF THE LOUISVILLE FIRE DEPARTMENT. 

Essential Functions:

  • Performs supervisory fire and related criminal activity investigative work
  • Apprehends and directs the apprehension of persons suspected of committing arson or arson related crimes
  • Under Kentucky Revised Statutes 95160, Arson Investigators have full police powers

Position Duties

  • Responds to incidents as directed
  • Supervises and trains subordinate personnel assigned to the Arson Bureau of the Louisville Division of Fire
  • Develops work schedules and work assignments for subordinates as directed
  • Assists in the direction of other personnel assigned to the Arson Bureau
  • Reviews reports, fire data and files of investigations and develops strategies to deal with problems and arson trends
  • Maintains records of arson investigation activities
  • Makes arrests as a result of arson investigations
  • Appears in court as a witness
  • Directs the Bureau and its investigations during the absence of the Chief of Arson Investigation as directed
  • Investigates incidents of accidental, incendiary, suspicious or undetermined origin, false fire alarms and related incidents
  • Interviews witnesses, victims, and suspects involved in investigations
  • Prepares evidence, records and other material for presentation in court
  • Prepares and composes reports and maintains records of investigations
  • Reviews and directs the investigative course in open arson cases
  • Works with other city agencies to address problems with fire prone vacant structures
  • Enforces all applicable laws pertaining to fire-setting and related offenses
  • Participates in assignments requiring public speaking and assists community organizations in developing strategies for arson prevention programs
  • Participates in Fire Company or in-service school and other training in the procedures for fire investigation and preservation of evidence as directed
  • Participates in regular and off-duty details, investigations and other assignments
  • Operates equipment used in the Arson Bureau for educational and instructional purposes
  • Assists in investigations as directed
  • Performs related work

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a current employee with two years of experience as an Arson Investigator I with the Louisville Fire Department by the date the eligibility list goes into effect
  • Bachelor's degree in criminology, police administration, or related field
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

Other Minimums:
  • Must complete firefighter recruit training and maintain basic skills
  • Must work a varied schedule
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license
Physical Requirement & Working Conditions:
  • Meets regular and punctual attendance standards and any special needs of the position as determined by management, including mandatory overtime and performing related work
  • Communicates with individuals in person and utilizes all types of communication media
  • Spends prolonged periods of time sitting, standing, walking, carrying, stooping and climbing
  • Lifts and carries items weighing in excess of 100 pounds in a team setting
  • Spends prolonged periods of time exposed to the elements
  • Works at locations with limited or difficult access including uneven terrain

MINIMUM SALARY: $44.33/hour
