Job Summary
Working as part of a small, supportive team, Legal Counsel will play a key role in delivering legal services, governance, and compliance strategy across the UK business, encompassing Autoglass® and Laddaw®.
This role is ideal for a legal professional with a strong background in IT and Data Protection as well as experience in commercial law, which are essential requirements. It offers an excellent opportunity for candidates seeking to transition from private practice to a dynamic in-house environment, where they can gain exposure to a broad range of business-critical legal matters The Legal Counsel ensures the business operates within the law, minimises risks, and supports key objectives by delivering commercially focused legal advice and solutions.
Accountabilities and Responsibilities
Legal Advice on IT and Data Protection
Provide expert legal advice on IT-related matters, including software licensing, IT systems, and cybersecurity.
Ensure compliance with relevant data protection laws and regulations, including GDPR.
Advise on legal risks and mitigation strategies relating to IT infrastructure, data usage, and emerging technologies.
Data Privacy and GDPR Compliance
Act as a trusted advisor on all data privacy issues, including GDPR compliance, handling data breaches, and updating internal policies.
Support the business in implementing best practices for data governance and privacy strategies.
Deliver training to internal stakeholders to promote awareness of data protection obligations.
Commercial Contracts
Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial contracts, including technology agreements and supplier contracts
Collaborate with internal teams to ensure contractual terms meet both legal standards and business objectives.
Provide commercially focused solutions to complex contract negotiations while safeguarding the company’s interests.
Legal Risk Management
Identify and assess legal risks related to IT systems, cybersecurity, and software usage, providing practical guidance to minimize exposure.
Support the business in navigating regulatory frameworks applicable to technology and data-driven operations.
Work proactively to develop legal policies and procedures that align with evolving business needs.
Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement
Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including IT, compliance, and operations, to align legal advice with strategic objectives.
Act as a bridge between legal and technical teams to address challenges arising from IT projects, technology adoption, and compliance initiatives.
Build and maintain effective relationships with internal stakeholders and external advisors.
Policy Development
Contribute to the design and implementation of internal policies and frameworks, particularly in IT governance, data protection, and contract management.
Ensure policies are robust, scalable, and reflect current legal and regulatory standards.
Dispute Resolution
Assist in managing disputes, including those related to IT systems and commercial contracts.
Work closely with external counsel, where necessary, to handle litigation and negotiations.
Provide strategic guidance to resolve disputes efficiently while protecting the company’s reputation and interests.
Continuous Learning and Development
Stay informed on legislative developments, particularly those affecting IT, data protection, and commercial law.
Monitor trends in emerging technologies, such as AI, blockchain, and IoT, to provide forward-looking legal advice.
Proactively identify opportunities for innovation and process improvement within legal and compliance functions.
Qualifications
Qualified solicitor with circa. 4-5 years of post-qualification experience
Strong background in IT law and Data Protection is essential.
Experience in commercial law is essential, with a demonstrated ability to handle complex agreements.
Skills, Experience and Qualifications
Extensive knowledge of GDPR and other data protection regulations.
Proven experience in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating commercial contracts, particularly those involving IT services and data considerations.
In-depth understanding of IT-related legal matters, including software licensing, cybersecurity, and emerging technologies.
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a focus on delivering commercially focused legal solutions.
Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, capable of influencing stakeholders at all levels. Strong commercial acumen, governance expertise, and strategic thinking capabilities.
Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to simplify complex legal and governance concepts for diverse audiences.
Effective time management and organisational skills, capable of handling competing priorities.
