EXAMINATION This is a merged promotional and open competitive recruitment. The examination may consist of a training and experience (supplemental responses) evaluation, written test, performance test and/or structured oral interview. To qualify to be placed on an eligibility list, a candidate must obtain a passing score on each part of the examination process. Final scores will be obtained by combining the relative weights of scores on each part of the examination. Job Description

FULLERTON SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASSIFIED PERSONNEL COMMISSION RANGE 32 MECHANIC II JOB SUMMARY Under general supervision using considerable journey level skills, maintains and makes mechanical repairs to gas and diesel powered buses, trucks and automobile equipment. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS The class of Mechanic II differs from that of Mechanic I in that the duties and responsibilities involve journey level skilled maintenance of large vehicles with diesel and gas engines. The duties of a Mechanic I revolve around routine cleaning and servicing of school buses, and other District vehicles. The Mechanic II differs from the class of Lead Mechanic in that duties do not include the coordination and supervision of the District’s vehicle maintenance program. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Performs inspections of buses for conformance to Highway Patrol standards; inspects, diagnoses and repairs of mechanical defects in buses, trucks, automobiles and other District equipment; does all major drive train repairs and overhauls including engines, transmissions, and differentials; checks emission systems for conformance to Bureau of Automotive Repair requirements; performs brake adjustments, repairs and overhauls on both air and hydraulic systems; performs body and paint work on District vehicles; maintains records of repairs made; recommends purchase of needed parts and tools; drives and tests buses; cleans tools and work areas; provides emergency road service to disabled buses; works overtime to make emergency repairs; performs other related duties as needed. EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS Education: Equivalent to graduation from high school. Experience: Any combination equivalent to one year’s experience as a journey level automobile mechanic involving work on buses and/or trucks. Knowledge of: The tools, equipment and procedures used in the general overhaul, repair and maintenance of buses and trucks; laws governing equipment and vehicle standards for school buses. Ability to: Diagnose malfunctions and make mechanical repairs to a variety of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles; perform body and paint repairs operate equipment and tools used in vehicle maintenance; keep simple records; follow oral and written instructions; maintain harmonious working relationships with school officials, other employees and the public; maintain insurability to drive a District vehicle. License: A valid Class A or B California Driver's License with “P” and “S” endorsements. PHYSICAL STANDARDS The work environment and physical demands of the positions as described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of a position in this vehicle and bus mechanic category. These physical standards are generic in nature and tasks may vary dependent on school site or specialized department assignment. Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical vehicle parts and equipment. The employee frequently works with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, gas fumes and paint sprays, and may work in awkward or restrictive work spaces. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. The employee must also be able to drive a vehicle/bus during adverse weather conditions and through traffic hazards to provide emergency road service to disabled busses and vehicles. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and occasionally very loud. Physical Demands: The physical demands of this position include frequent lifting, pushing, pulling and/or moving up to 100 pounds. The employee is required to stand approximately 70% of the time and walk approximately 30% of the time. The ability to reach overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally with hands and arms is required as is bending at the waist, stooping, kneeling and crouching to inspect busses or vehicles. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate power tools and equipment is required as is some climbing of ladders and frequent climbing of stairs. Specific vision abilities required to observe and perform repairs include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to hear and speak to exchange information via two-way radio and personal contact. Requirements / Qualifications

POSITION DETAILS The Fullerton School District is seeking a qualified individual to fill a full-time Mechanic II position in our Transportation Department. As a Mechanic II, you will maintain and make mechanical repairs to CNG, gas, electric, propane, and diesel-powered buses, trucks, and automobile equipment. You will also be responsible for performing inspections and maintaining District school buses and vehicles to California Highway Patrol standards to ensure the safe transportation of students and employees. Working hours are from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. This career opportunity is an 8-hour/day, 12-month position with paid holidays, sick leave, and vacation.
