Position Purpose 
Perform heat treating processes on fishhooks. Degrease hooks and use furnaces to harden metal hooks in accordance with company specifications and predetermined schedules to fulfill customer orders.

Knowledge/Skills and Experience 

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous mechanical experience preferred in order to operate and do minor maintenance on furnace washer. 
  • Must possess basic reading and writing skills in order to read, understand and follow directions and maintain records.
  • Must successfully complete an initial program of classroom instruction regarding the nature of handling, storage and treatment of hazardous material including all pertinent regulations. Continue on-the-job training on this subject will be done when deemed necessary by Manager or when new materials or regulations are introduced. This training must include emergency response procedures including shutdown of operations. All training will be done on an annual basis.

Essential Duties

  • Degrease hooks from the hook machine and brazing departments daily and from other departments when needed.  
  • Manually load and unload trays of hooks into furnaces on a continuous basis according to pre­determined temperatures and time.
  • Adjust furnace controls for time, temperature and dew points as needed.
  • Continually monitor and analyze output of the Heat Treat Furnaces, Hook Degreasing and Hook Drying operations to ensure specifications and quality standards are being met. 
  • Add chemicals such as oxidizers, mild alkalizers and lubricants to equipment to maintain levels and / or concentration.
  • Cryogenically treats hooks as requested per customer order.
  • Maintain written records on hook loads.
  • Maintain good housekeeping in the department by sweeping, keeping thoroughfares clear of obstacles, etc.
  • Quality-checks hooks out of each basket per instructions. Assure proper cards are placed in correct trays.
  • Willing and able to relocate to other departments such as, but not limited to Finishing, Shipping or Warehouse, if not needed in heat treat.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Physical Environment and Working Conditions 

  • Able to work and physically able to tolerate extreme heat.
  • Able to lift arms above head and reach arms in all directions.
  • Able to wear safety equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, aprons, safety gear. (PPE)
  • Able to bend, stoop, kneel, and twist throughout the shift. 
  • Able to lift 30lbs regularly and up to 50 lbs pounds occasionally 
  • Able to bend knees and lift up to 4' off the ground.
  • Able to use arms to reach up, out and over head and shoulders
  • Must be able to reach out to push, pull, and lift frequently during the shift.
  • Able to push pull up to 125 lbs pounds in order to use pallet jacks.
  • Able to stand and/or walk for duration of the 12-hour shift.
  • Must wear hearing protection and participate in Hearing Conservation Program. 
  • May be required to participate in Confined Space Entry Training Program and take corresponding physical examination.
  • Works in room with temperatures up to 100 degrees during summer months (June through August) using furnaces that could reach 2,000 degrees.  
  • Able to stand for long periods of time and physically able to tolerate excessive heat from the furnaces.  
  • Able to work with chemicals within the De-flux process.
  • May be required to use hearing protection and participate in hearing conservation program.
