Position Overview: We are seeking a skilled Ophthalmic Technician to join our patient care team. The ideal candidate will be a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT), or have equivalent training and experience. In this role, you will support our providers with both diagnostic and treatment procedures as well as related administrative tasks, ensuring patients receive exceptional care.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Gather Patient Histories: Obtain and verify patient medical histories to ensure accurate and complete clinical information.
- Perform Diagnostic Testing: Conduct visual function and diagnostic tests, including applanation tonometry, refraction, and retinoscopy, to support accurate diagnosis.
- Operate Ophthalmic Equipment: Use specialized tools such as the Humphrey Field Analyzer and OCT to capture precise eye measurements.
- Report Clinical Findings: Communicate changes in visual acuity or other concerns promptly to the ophthalmologist for timely care decisions.
- Prepare Patients for Exams: Administer eye dilation and ensure patients are ready for examination.
- Educate Patients: Provide clear instructions on the correct use of prescribed eye drops, medications, and contact lenses to support treatment compliance.
- Manage Inventory: Monitor and maintain ophthalmic supplies to ensure availability for patient care. Communicate when supplies in the room are low or out of stock.
- Document in EHR: Accurately record findings and procedures in the electronic medical record system for continuity of care.
- Prioritization: Ability to navigate through daily assignments such as completing voicemails, Klara messages and tasks, including prescription refills, faxes, and prior authorization.
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills and Qualifications
- Completion of an accredited ophthalmic assistant or technician program strongly preferred (COA or COT).
- One to two years of experience in a medical setting or Ophthalmology experience (preferred)
- Strong communication skills and attention to detail.
- Availability to work Monday–Friday and occasional weekends.
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time
- Ability to work in a dimly lit setting
- Ability to multitask and manage time well
- Excellent active listening skills and professionalism
- Bilingual (Spanish preferred)
