SUMMARY: The BMT Nurse provides quality healthcare and is a professional caregiver who demonstrates critical thinking skills and scientific judgement in the anticipation and planning for the care of the patient. Under direct supervision and working interdependently with physicians, advanced practitioners, and other care team members, provides a broad range of nursing services following established policies and protocols, with a primary focus on bone marrow transplant patient population.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides nursing support in clinic to BMT physicians and APRN.
- Triages clinical calls from patients/families, re-directing them accordingly.
- Obtains medication authorizations and handles medication refill requests.
- Follows up with patients on test and lab results and maintains communication with patients/families after visits.
- Takes vitals, draws labs, and administers vaccines.
- Prepares patients’ letters as needed for physician review and signature.
- Triages and refers patients for further care based on severity of illness and symptoms. Acts as clinical liaison between the clinic and inpatient unit.
- Utilizes written guidelines/protocol for clinical decision making and management.
- Prepares timely, legible, and complete documentation of all patient care as provided by law, regulation, and established policy. Demonstrates an awareness of and sensitivity to patient/family rights, including offering assistance to patients/families in filling out required forms for transplant.
- Prepares patient’s charts for clinic patients in Athena, ensuring necessary medical records are uploaded into EMR, as well as inputting all lab orders for patients in Cerner at minimum 1 day prior to patient’s appointment.
- Applies safety principles as identified by established policy.
- Participates in continuing education to continually improve skills and abilities and stay abreast of current technologies/practices.
- Ensures compliance with legal issues including but not limited to patient confidentiality and risk management; ensures compliance with JCAHO, federal, state, and local regulations.
- Participates in quality improvement and utilization review activities.
- Exhibits a high degree of courtesy, tact, and poise when interacting with patients, families, and other healthcare professionals.
- Adjusts to fluctuating peaks in patient flow, acuity, and other operational demands while maintaining quality.
- Ensures communication between staff & physicians; responsible for arranging appointments & follow-up; serve as a front-line resource to obtain records, test results, & other clinical information.
- Collaborates with clinic staff, case management, and authorizations teams in the coordination of admissions and procedures for inpatient/outpatient needs to prevent any treatment related delays
- Serves as a backup for office-based infusion operations for BMT patients, working alongside clinical manager and infusion nurses to provide infusion services to patients in the clinic setting.
- Cover for other roles and responsibilities in the BMT department as needed and/or directed by BMT Medical Director.
- Creates and updates med action plan.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by management.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduate from an accredited school of nursing.
- Current RN license in the state of Florida.
- BLS and PALS certification required (may be obtained within first 90 days of work).
- Two to four years related experience or equivalent. Oncology experience strongly preferred.
- Ability to understand and adhere to established policies, procedures, and protocols.
- Able to work collaboratively with multiple health professionals in a busy and complex environment using tact, diplomacy, and discipline.
- Strong charting/documentation skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
- Ability to manage priorities and workflow.
- Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm.
