General Purpose of the Position:

The IGS tech solutions laboratory requires a high level of skilled staff to undertake test work involving cutting and preparation of metal, metallographic evaluation, corrosion testing, heat treatment, wear simulation, and the application of both high-temperature metal and lower temperature organic and ceramic coating for industrial use. 

The Technician II - Mechanical will work alongside other technicians in the manufacture and evaluation of test materials, the maintenance, calibration, and commissioning of test equipment, and the manufacture of bulk coating materials. This work will be in support of projects and operations managed by the tech center’s Principle Engineer – Materials. The laboratory is located at our Global headquarters on the south side of Richmond, Virginia. The function of IGS Tech Solutions is to support the global business development, operations, and continued growth of the world-leading provider of advanced surface protection. It is understood that many of the operations, tools, and techniques are unique and will require training and mentorship. Certain basic skills and familiarities at a technician or associate degree level will be required, however. Although the position is a full-time laboratory position, the technician should also be willing and able on occasion to travel to our customers’ facilities to provide field support to our operations crews or support inspections. This will predominantly be in the US, however, Canadian and international support may be needed.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Chemical and Product Production

  • Manufacture of specialty chemicals in 5 gallon drum batches, as well as potential future chemical systems developed/manufactured by the lab
  • Documentation and logistics (tracking inventory stockpiles, receiving raw materials, releasing stockpiles to Operations, etc.)
  • Work with the engineer in charge to ensure quality control and implement process improvements

  

Laboratory Maintenance, Technical Work and Administration

  • Assist Engineers with laboratory and technical build projects; basic experimental setup and execution; monitor equipment
  • Perform laboratory maintenance (ex. repairing broken equipment, moving equipment, ensuring cleanliness and organization in specified areas, etc.)
  • Spray HVTS test coupons and small lab jobs after training.
  • Other tasks as needed, i.e. packaging and shipping (domestic + international), logistics organization and tracking, basic computer work (data entry), purchasing/PO/quoting, organization, etc.

 

Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Experience working in a lab environment or experience in an prototyping engineering environment
  • Strong work ethic, attention to detail and a high level of organization. Willingness to perform tasks beyond job description should they come up. Reasonable mobility and the physical capacity to move loads around within OSHA limits.
  • Experience in light metal manufacturing/maintenance operations.
  • Proficiency in English both verbal and written
  • Ability and willingness to enter safe and certified confined spaces and climb certified scaffold/ladders.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally if required (approximately 4-10 weeks per year in total / 3-14 days at a time)

Additional Preferred Experience With Any of The Following a Plus:

  • Familiarity with metallographic preparation and evaluation.
  • Hands-on operation of manufacturing equipment and controls systems.
  • Familiarity with spray painting, grit blasting.
  • Operation/Calibration of test equipment in the evaluation of corrosion/wear/strength or thermal properties etc.
  • Plumbing, electrical, welding skills

 

Education and Experience Required

  • Associates degree (Engineering technology, automotive, HVAC, electrical apprenticeship, plumbing, carpentry, etc.) or trade school experience is required. Coating experience is a bonus.
  • At least 3 years of experience in high-level hands on work, including electrical, machinist/fabrication, HVAC, carpentry, etc.
