About the Department

Position Duties
Supervise and evaluate the performance of staff involved in park and open space maintenance, repair, and tree care. Directly manage assigned crews and review their work for accuracy, proper methods, and compliance with standards. Evaluate trees to determine the best course of action for pruning, removal, planting, and treatment. Diagnose tree and shrub diseases and pests and plan and implement appropriate treatments. Inspect the work of contractors to ensure it meets project specifications and recommend changes as needed. Oversee and monitor construction projects for new parks and trails. Monitor fuels reduction projects in open spaces and coordinate with department staff and contractors. Oversee and monitor landscaping development review processes with other city departments. Estimate the time, materials, and equipment needed for projects and order supplies as required. Communicate with the public and other city staff, answering questions about urban forestry and landscaping. Maintain operational records, including the tree inventory and daily inspection and maintenance reports. Lead and participate in snow removal efforts.
Minimum Qualifications
An associate’s degree in forestry, urban forestry, horticulture, natural resources management, or a related field. ISA Certified Arborist designation. Three years of progressively responsible experience in park development, horticulture, or urban forestry. A combination of relevant education, training, and experience may also be considered. A valid state Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Knowledge of best practices for leading and training a crew, as well as an understanding of the proper methods and materials for urban forestry work. The ability to safely operate and maintain heavy equipment and power tools. An understanding of occupational hazards and commitment to following safety practices. The ability to read and interpret technical documents, maps, and instructions. Excellent communication skills and the physical ability to perform manual labor in various weather conditions.
