What You'll Do:

Are you passionate about securing media placements, shaping narratives, and growing a brand’s presence in the media landscape?

 

At Principal, we’re looking for a Public Relations Strategist who can elevate our earned media presence and expand our share of voice in the retirement space.

 

This is your opportunity to join a dynamic, collaborative team and play a pivotal role in delivering on our public relations strategy. We’re not starting from scratch—we’re building on momentum with agency support and executive buy-in. What You’ll Do:

  • Drive earned media strategy. Proactively identify media opportunities that align with business objectives and grow Principal’s visibility—especially in the Retirement & Income Solutions (RIS) space.
  • Pitch with purpose. Craft compelling media pitches, press releases, op-eds, and story angles that position Principal as a go-to voice for retirement topics.
  • Grow our share of voice. Monitor industry news, competitor activity, and earned media coverage to identify white space and strategically insert Principal into high-impact conversations.
  • Amplify thought leadership. Collaborate closely with the RIS thought leadership team and external PR agency to develop and promote expert commentary and secure external executive opportunities.
  • Deliver results. Drive strategy to deliver share of voice and other earned media metrics — and analyze results to shape future PR efforts.
  • Ensure message consistency. Work cross-functionally to align external messaging with internal communications and enterprise priorities.
Who You Are:
  • A public relations professional with a track record of delivering earned media results in competitive, fast-paced industries.
  • Skilled at building relationships with spokespeople and media to secure strategic placements in top-tier and trade media outlets.
  • Comfortable translating complex business and financial topics into compelling, media pitches.
  • Insight-driven, using media trends and data to guide strategy and optimize performance.
  • Collaborative and curious, always seeking new ways to amplify messaging and enhance brand presence.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent, in public relations, communications, journalism, marketing, or a related field.
  • 6+ years of experience in PR, media relations, or corporate communications, with a focus on earned media.
  • Proven success pitching and placing stories in national, regional, and trade media.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills across formats and platforms.
  • Strong project management, organizational, and strategic planning abilities.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.

Salary Range Information:Salary ranges below reflect targeted base salaries. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.Salary Range:$81900 - $140000 / yearTime Off Program:Flexible Time Off (FTO) is provided to salaried (exempt) employees and provides the opportunity to take time away from the office with pay for vacation, personal or short-term illness. Employees don’t accrue a bank of time off under FTO and there is no set number of days provided.Pension Eligible:YesAdditional Information:
