About the Department

Full-time position, which is responsible for evidence recovered by the Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Office by maintaining an intact chain of custody; gathers evidence at crime scenes, as needed; performs a variety of clerical, administrative and technical support services involving the maintenance and processing of criminal evidence; does related work as required, including work related to the Sex and Violent Offender Registry (SVOR) and Concealed Weapons Permit (CCW) process.

Position Duties

  • Secures, transports, categorizes, releases, logs, tags and photographs property and evidence for the Sheriff’s office
  • Checks serial numbers on items received to determine whether the items are stolen and sets items aside for fingerprinting
  • Prepares evidence and presents testimony in court regarding the maintenance, processing, care and security of the evidence;
  • Provides technical assistance to local law enforcement agencies and provides testimony in court
  • Deals with offenders, taking fingerprints and obtaining buccal swabs
  • Determines property ownership according to department policy and state statute.

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Experience/Training:

  • Graduation from High School or G.E. D.; and
  • One (1) years’ experience in general office work preferably in a law enforcement environment, evidence handling and/or working with inventory; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Selected applicants are subject to, and must pass, a full background check. 
Certifications:
  • Valid driver’s license issued by the State of Montana.
  • CJIN/NCIC Level I certification within first three (3) months of hire and maintain re-certification every two (2) years.  The supervisor may extend the deadline for the CJIN certification an additional three (3) months from date of hire.
Sheriff’s Department Employment Statement:
Any individual with a felony conviction, a domestic violence conviction or outstanding warrants is ineligible for consideration for employment by the Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Department.
