Person County Government is seeking a Field Training Officer / Lieutenant to play a vital role in shaping and supporting the EMS Division’s training and education programs.



As a Field Training Officer (Lieutenant), you’ll work under the direction of the EMS Education Coordinator to support all aspects of EMS training and education. You will be responsible for assisting the EMS Education Coordinator with planning, implementation, delivery and documentation of a wide range of training initiatives for EMS providers across your assigned shift and the Division as needed.

The starting salary will be determined with consideration given to both the candidate's educational background and relevant work experience.


Must possess a valid driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record per County policy.


This position will have built-in overtime.  The shift cycle is 24 hours on and 72 hours off.

Position Duties

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Plans, coordinates, delivers and documents EMS Education courses at the basic and advanced levels for EMS divisional employees on an assigned shift.
  • Provides input to employee performance evaluations related to training/education status.
  • Responsible for the coordination, implementation and supervision of the Field Training and Evaluation Program (FTEP) on an assigned shift.
  • Prepares EMS related instructional content and conducts training, or arranges training by others, on various topics relevant to the work of employees and documents training conducted. 
  • Collaborates with the EMS Education Coordinator and the Field Medical Officer to address training issues and/or scope of practice issues, conducts and oversees remediation programs for EMS employees on an assigned shift with noted skills or knowledge deficiencies. 
  • Participates in the Division Performance Improvement Program to identify trends in care delivery and present solutions to improve deficiencies. 
  • Responsible for ensuring that education requirements of the Infection Control Program, Hazardous Materials Program and Health Information Portability and Accountability/ Patient Privacy Program on an assigned shift remain current. 
  • Serves as a Basic Infection Control Officer for the EMS Division. 
  • Assists in the hiring and evaluation process for potential new employees. 
  • Participates with federal, state, regional, and local EMS agencies to enhance EMS education; serves on committees, boards, or other activities engaged in determining goals, objectives, and policies for EMS education. 
  • Researches emerging trends, techniques and procedures in emergency medicine and adult education delivery. 
  • Functions as the acting Field Medical Officer to an assigned shift when necessary due to vacancies.

Minimum Qualifications

DESIRABLE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Associates Degree or higher 
  • Experience as a classroom instructor, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Familiar with OSHA Standards, Infection Control Policy and Procedures, and certified at the Operations Level for Hazardous Materials. 
  • AHA ACLS, PALS and ITLS/PHTLS and NAEMT Instructor certifications 
  • Certification as a NCOEMS Level I Instructor at the ALS Level (Paramedic)


MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Graduation or GED equivalent. 
  • Four (4) years of field paramedic or related experience.

Other Qualifications

  • Requires Certification as North Carolina Emergency Paramedic or the ability to obtain NCOEMS Paramedic certification upon hiring. 
  • Certification at Operations Level for Hazardous Materials within one year of hiring. 
  • Certification as a Basic Designated Infection Control Officer within one year of hiring. 
  • NIMS ICS 100, 200, 700 and 800. 
  • AHA BLS Instructor certification or ability to obtain within 90 days of hiring. 
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history. 
  • EVD or EVOC within one year of hiring.
