About the Team
Seeds of Change employs and empowers local youth, fostering self-reliance and community engagement through the cultivation and sale of fresh produce in a state-of-the-art hydroponic greenhouse located in Anchorage, Alaska. The organization provides education in job skills, life skills, and social responsibility. Alaska Seeds of Change contributes to strengthening our economy and enhancing food security by offering a local, dependable, and high-quality food source. The produce is grown by young adults from our community as they develop the skills necessary for successful, responsible adulthood.
Position Summary
The Greenhouse Assistant plays a key role in supporting the greenhouse operations at Alaska Seeds of Change. This position works under the guidance of the Greenhouse Coordinator to ensure plant health, assist with production needs, and maintain clean, organized, and safe greenhouse spaces. The role also supports apprentices during their shifts and may assist clinical teams with light prep work for station activities.
The Grow Staff supports the core operations of our hydroponic and outdoor growing systems, performing essential tasks such as planting, harvesting, packaging, and general maintenance. This position helps maintain a functional, clean, and therapeutic space for other AKBH programs while offering youth the opportunity to build basic job skills through real work experience.
This position is designed to be a temporary position (3-6 months) geared towards building vocational skills.
What You’ll Do
- Support the daily operation of hydroponic and outdoor garden systems.
- Plant, transplant, maintain, and harvest vegetables and herbs.
- Monitor and document plant health, quality, and system performance.
- Package and prepare produce for distribution or sale.
- Assist with cleaning, sanitation, and general upkeep of the greenhouse environment.
- Follow instructions for safe use of tools, equipment, and growing systems.
- Execute daily plant care tasks (seeding, transplanting, harvesting, etc.)
- Monitor growing systems and alert leadership to issues
- Ensure cleanliness and readiness of growing zones and workstations
- Assist in crop planning and inventory tracking

- Full-Time/Part-Time, Non-Exempt
- Pay Range: $13.00 - $16.82 (Eligible for up to $4,000 in incentive with the average being $1,500)

- AKBH offers generous benefits including two healthcare options for employees and their dependent children, 401k with immediate vesting and up to 5% match, 4% automatically contributed by AKBH. PTO is accrued at the rate of five (5) weeks of PTO for the first year; eight (8) weeks of PTO after the first year. PTO is used for company recognized holidays.
What We Need from You
Education: High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
Experience:
- Experience with plants, gardening, or greenhouse work preferred
- Reliability and ability to follow a daily routine
- Interest in mentoring youth and/or supporting therapeutic environments
- Willingness to adapt to seasonal needs and shifting priorities
Special Knowledge or Skills:
- Interest in learning through physical, hands-on work.
- Ability to communicate clearly with staff and peers.
- Ability to follow instructions and complete repetitive tasks reliably.
- Basic computer use helpful but not required.
Physical/Mental Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Able to bend, reach, stretch, and stand for extended periods.
- Willingness to work in warm, humid greenhouse settings and outdoors.
- Able to handle multiple physical tasks in a single shift.
