Description

The Accounting Manager plays a key role in the financial management of the organization by overseeing day-to-day accounting functions, ensuring compliance with Head Start and federal grant requirements, maintaining robust internal controls, and supporting the CFO in reporting, budgeting, and audits. This position supervises finance staff and ensures financial operations aligned with organizational goals and regulations.


On site attendance is required. 

Salary: $75,000/year

Requirements

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Accounting & Financial Management

  • Manage the general ledger and ensure timely month-end and year-end closing.
  • Record and review recurring journal entries, including payroll, benefits, and other allocations.
  • Perform and review balance sheet reconciliations and necessary adjusting journal entries.
  • Oversee accounts payable processing and ensure timely and accurate payments.
  • Maintain and reconcile fixed asset subledger, track depreciation, and federal interest.
  • Assist in the preparation of federal, state, and internal financial reports.
  • Maintain cost allocation plans and ensure expenses are properly classified.

Supervision & Staff Support

  • Supervise and mentor fiscal staff, including those handling A/P, A/R and payroll.
  • Serve as backup for key fiscal functions when needed.

Grants & Compliance

  • Monitor and manage multiple grants, including billing, receipts, and compliance with terms and conditions.
  • Ensure all costs incurred are allowable, allocable, and reasonable under applicable guidelines.
  • Support the development and implementation of strong internal controls and financial procedures.
  • Coordinate and support annual financial and compliance audits.
  • Assist with preparation and submission of reports in PMS, HSES, and Grant Solutions.

Program Participation and Team Member:

  • Participate in ongoing professional development aligned with Head Start regulations.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records and ensure asset reconciliation with financials.
  • Prepare and update the organization's cost allocation plan as needed.
  • Assist in developing and updating fiscal policies and procedures.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of early childhood education and Head Start.

Respect and maintain confidentiality of information regarding enrolled children and families, personnel issues, and other program operations as appropriate.

Training:

In consultation with supervisor, develop professional work goals and training plan. Participate in training as requested.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in nonprofit or government-funded organizations.
  • Experience with Head Start or federal grants management is highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, internal controls, and grant compliance.
  • Proficiency in fund accounting systems (e.g., MIP) and Microsoft Excel.
  • Proven supervisory and mentoring experience.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
