Job Summary: The Associate Director, Site Operations is a leadership level role within the Global Corporate Real Estate (GCRE) team.  This role is responsible for non-GMP facilities (maintenance and engineering) and corporate services at BioMarin’s global offices, labs, and warehouses.  The role ensures assets are operated and maintained in a cost-effective manner while providing a safe, clean, and comfortable work environment.  Reporting to the Executive Director of GCRE, you will work closely with stakeholders within GCRE, Procurement, California Facilities & Engineering, and FinanceThis role enables the teams at BioMarin to focus on its patient-centered mission, delivering first-in-class and best-in-class therapeutics that provide meaningful advances for those with serious and life-threatening rare genetic diseases.   
 
Key Responsibilities: 
 
Strategic Planning 
  • Develop and implement long-term facilities strategies and plans 
  • Manage procurement processes, vendor contracts, and supplier relationships to ensure value and compliance 
  • Develop and execute policies, procedures, programs, and budgets for effective maintenance of facilities and equipment 
  • Support and implement environmental sustainability efforts and drive projects that offer significant conservation benefits and/or financial savings 
  • Own and prepare contingency plans and ensure execution of plans 
Operations (Engineering, Maintenance and Corporate Services) 
  • Drive excellence and manage day-to-day operations  
  • Ensure efficient, reliable and safe operation of all building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire safety systems, etc.) and site work (landscaping, etc.) for both lab and office buildings  
  • Own building engineering, facility and systems. Responsible for the asset lifecycle of the facility and equipment within the campus. Identification of improvement initiatives/projects, identification of cost savings, energy savings, water conservation, etc. 
  • Own maintenance lifecycle processes and systems 
  • Develop engineering designs, specifications, and construction documents for various campus projects 
  • Ensure all engineering and maintenance activities comply with relevant codes, regulations, and safety standards 
  • Lead corporate services operations, ensuring high-quality service delivery across departments 
  • Create scalable, fit-for-purpose services to support great workplaces globally 
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders to ensure seamless delivery of maintenance and services 
  • Partner with Procurement for the necessary supplies, materials, and services   
Financial Management 
  • Prepare, implement, and oversee operating budgets.  Partner closely with Finance to monitor and optimize budgets 
  • Establish functional KPI’s and report regularly on performance against metrics and targets 
  • Develop estimates for new projects and modifications   
Team Management 
  • Recruit, manage, and coach staff to build an engaged and high performing team   
  • Create a culture that fosters a safe work environment and inclusion 
  • Create a culture that embeds environmental sustainability principals into maintenance and engineering operations  
  • Champion and drive an environment of continuous improvement (CI) 
  • Lead change initiatives as needed 

 

  • 4 days/week on-site presence required. 5 days/week site presence may be necessary depending on activities.  Provide 24/7 Response for all building system & infrastructure emergencies  
  • Other duties as assigned 
Qualifications: 
  • Bachelor’s degree required – preferably with a focus in engineering, architecture, industrial engineering. Professional certifications such as AIA, PE, MCR/SLCR, IFMA and/or LEED are a bonus, but not required 
  • 7-10 years relevant experience in Maintenance/Engineering/Facilities   
  • Proven record of providing excellent internal and external customer service 
  • An understanding of maintenance processes, systems, and compliance with strong technical skills 
  • An understanding and awareness of latest industry standards of environmental sustainability integration to the biopharmaceutical sector (e.g. knowledge of ISO 50001) 
  • Sound leadership qualities and the ability to lead, develop, and motivate a cross-functional team 
  • Successfully navigate challenges and influence across the enterprise 
  • Experience managing budgets and contracts
