About the Department

The Engineer III Traction Power reports to the Manager, Traction Power Engineering and is responsible for engineering, construction, maintenance and design support of capital improvement projects for the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board (Caltrain).

Position Duties

  • Guide drafters/designers to prepare single line diagrams, elementary and wiring diagrams, conduit and cable sizing/routing, substation physical layouts, emergency trip, grounding and lighting, selection of substation equipment specifications, proposal development, construction cost estimates, and project scheduling, test plans, field tests, reports, analysis, and technical studies for traction power systems.
  • Plan, organize and control engineering resources for traction power alterations and major projects, monitor progress and ensure the work is completed to the program and within the budget.
  • Inspect, test and commission system modifications and installation works ensuring compliance with Electrical Safety Legislation and Caltrain electrification standards and specifications.
  • Provide technical and administrative support to the Manager Traction Power by investigating, reporting, auditing and documenting work practices and processes in accordance with quality principles.
  • Oversee projects performed by contractors on Caltrain property. Ensure their designs are compliant with Caltrain design criteria and specifications.
Examples of Essential Duties: 
  • Investigate the root cause of any traction power equipment defects and recommend technical solutions and improvements.
  • Review and perform engineering calculations for Traction Power to protect the integrity of the railroad electrification equipment and to ensure technical requirements are met. 
  • Prepare calculations, plans, and specifications to support traction power and way side power cubicles design and analysis using Caltrain design criteria and standards for new and improvement projects.
  • Assist with reviewing drawings, construction cost estimates, specifications, technical reports, and other contract documents.
  • Provide technical guidance to Project Manager(s)  and other projects as required by responding to RFI, construction submittal and site-specific workplan.
  • Perform site inspections during construction and maintenance projects to determine if they are within tolerance levels established by the transit industry and other applicable regulations/specifications.
  • Develop solutions and provide technical input for design optimization for cost effectiveness, risk management challenges and constructability improvements for capital and maintenance projects.
  • Update traction power system standards and as-built drawings.
  • Conductprojectmeetingsandfieldmeetingswithinternalandthird-party personnel.
  • Perform site investigations and walk-downs in high-voltage substations and along electrified railroads.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Sufficient experience, training and/or education to demonstrate the knowledge and ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the position. In lieu of a degree, work-related experience that demonstrates the skills and experience necessary to perform this role will be accepted. Development of the required knowledge and abilities is typically obtained through but not limited to:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical or mechanical Engineering, or  closely related field.
  • Four (4) years of full-time professional experience in a rail transit traction electrification system.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A Professional Engineer's license is preferred but not required.
  • Experience in construction and operation of 2x25kV AC electrical traction power fixed equipment and associated assets is preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of budgeting, estimating and programming of traction power system activities.
  • Extensive knowledge of traction safe working principles, practices and procedures, including testing, commissioning practices and procedures and traction modification design.
  • WorkingknowledgeandexperienceofFederalandStatetransportationregulationsandprograms,including FRA, CPUC and AREMA is desired.
  • Must possess effective oral, written, and presentation communication skills.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with safe driving record.
