Step into a leadership role that directly shapes the safety and resilience of Sarasota County as our next Deputy Fire Chief of Operations. This highly professional administrative and managerial position plays a critical role in leading, managing, and overseeing daily operations or specific divisions within our internationally accredited, all-hazards response Fire Department. Reporting directly to and assisting the Fire Chief, you’ll guide the work of subordinate personnel, make independent operational decisions, and ensure our teams are ready to respond to any emergency, whether it’s a fire, medical call, technical rescue, marine incident, or large-scale disaster. About the Position

If selected, you will be responsible for...

  • Assist the Fire Chief with overall department leadership and executive planning, and support the development, implementation, and monitoring of strategic and master plans.

  • Ensure compliance with county policies, department directives, and the collective bargaining agreement, and assist in formulating, implementing, and administering department-wide policies, procedures, rules, and general orders.

  • Guide emergency operations strategies to ensure effective service delivery.

  • Communicate key information to subordinate personnel and ensure compliance across the chain of command.

  • Facilitate ISO evaluations and support the fire accreditation process.

  • Manage mutual/automatic aid agreements, interlocal agreements, and other departmental contracts.

  • Coordinate with the Fire Chief on budget development, review, and monitoring.

  • Conduct research and provide recommendations that align financial resources with department goals.

  • Conduct research and prepare reports on special projects as assigned by the Fire Chief and complete assignments aligned with departmental goals while maintaining strict confidentiality.

  • Serve as a liaison on behalf of the Fire Chief with other agencies, boards, committees, and local governments.

  • Represent the department in labor negotiations and labor-management committee meetings.

  • Collaborate with internal county departments on Fire Department matters.

  • Oversee personnel-related matters, including Workers’ Compensation, FMLA, investigations, grievances, discipline, scheduling, and promotions.

  • Provide guidance and support to assistant fire chiefs to ensure compliance with county policies and the collective bargaining agreement.

  • Manage activities related to fraud prevention, risk mitigation, and audit compliance, review audit findings, and ensure corrective actions and controls are implemented.

  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the Fire Chief.

Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

E-Work/Hybrid Work: Currently, this position is eligible to e-work up to 2 days per week! After you complete your first six months, contingent on work requirements and other factors, you’ll be eligible for this fantastic benefit.

About You

To be considered for this role, you must have the following:

  • Master’s degree in Emergency Management, Fire Science, Business Administration, Public Administration, or related field required with a minimum of six (6) years of progressive fire administration, emergency medical services work, and/or fire operations command responsibilities, with a proven track record of effective leadership and progressive fire service management

  • OR- Bachelor’s degree in Emergency Management, Fire Science, Business Administration, Public Administration, or related field required with a minimum of eight (8) years of progressive fire administration, emergency medical services work, and/or fire operations command responsibilities, with a proven track record of effective leadership and progressive fire service management.

  • Current and valid Florida Minimum Standards Firefighter Certification.

  • Current and valid Florida EMT or Paramedic Certification.

  • Current and valid State of Florida driver’s license, or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.

The ideal candidate has the following knowledge, skills, and/or abilities:

  • National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer designation and/or Chief Fire Officer designation.

  • NIMS Incident Command Position Certifications: I-100, I-200, I-300, I-400, I-700, and/or I-800.

  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience working two levels or less below the Fire Chief.

Subject to Passing Substance Screening: This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment for a period of five years.

CJIS Clearance: The successful candidate will be subject to an extensive background check(s) as a part of the hiring process.

About Everything Else

Starting Pay Range: $158,000.00 - $160,500.00 (annual) base salary.
