Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) First Assist

A Brief Overview
The CST FA practices within expanded role as first assistant during surgical interventions assuming responsibility for advanced surgical assisting skills. The CST FA works under the supervision of the registered nurse to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive and minimally invasive surgical procedures. The CST FA practices in collaboration with and at the direction of the surgeon during the intraoperative phase of the perioperative experience. "Under the direction of the surgeon" means that the surgeon is within the facility and immediately available if needed. This individual works to ensure that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. A CST FA possesses expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combines the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
What you will do
- Communicate the surgeon’s preferences and specific patient needs to surgical team
- Position the patient to provide the necessary exposure for the procedure, as well as the surgeon preference
- Provide intraoperative skills such as visualization, trocar insertion, injection of local anesthetics, hemostasis, tissue handling, placement and securing of wound drains, and closure of body planes
- Utilize appropriate suturing techniques, according to surgeon preference, to close the incision at the end of the procedure
- Providing postoperative skills in patient care such as applying dressings to surgical wounds, patient transfer and transport, transfer of care, and monitoring for immediate complications
- Collaborating with others to provide continuity of care
Education Qualifications
- Certificate from a NBTSA (National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting) accredited surgical assisting program Required
- Associate's Degree from a NBTSA (National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting) accredited surgical assisting program Required
Experience Qualifications
- Evidence of a minimum of 15 hours CEU's annually (regardless if employed or not with TH throughout the entire calendar year) Required
Skills and Abilities
- Works with patients, families and other health care providers.
- Proficient in technical skills required during a surgical procedure, including, but not limited to: clamping, cauterizing, suturing, inserting, injecting, manipulating, retracting, cutting, and ligating tissue as necessary
- Have knowledge of and using all open, laparoscopic, and robotic equipment necessary for a procedure
Licenses and Certifications
- Certified Surgical Technologist - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting Required or
- Certified Surgical First Assistant certification (CSFA) Required
- Basic Life Support Certified - American Heart Association is required within 30 days of hire. Recertification every two years is Required
