Job Title: Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Technician 

 

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Classification: Classified

 

Reports to: Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Supervisor

 

License Required: Yes (VA. Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation)

 

Summary 

The HVAC Technician is responsible for performing the skilled and technical work in the installation, service, maintenance and repair of the refrigeration, air conditioning, heating, ventilation, BAS controls, frequency drives, oil fired boilers, and related equipment and to maintain optimal environmental conditions in all PCPS buildings.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  

  • Performs the full range of work involved in the repair, maintenance, installation and service of the refrigeration, air conditioning, heating, ventilating systems (to include Dx units, RTU’s, VAV’s, Unit Ventilators, Water Source Heat Pumps, Chillers, Cooling Towers, Variable Refrigerant Flow System, DOAS, Frequency Drives, and Oil Fired Boilers), BAS controls and related equipment.
  • Diagnoses, locates and repairs malfunctions with all the refrigeration, air conditioning, heating, ventilating, BAS controls and related equipment. 
  • Maintain records of repairs, maintenance and service of all the refrigeration, air conditioning, heating, ventilating, BAS controls and related equipment.
  • Maintain records of Refrigerant recovery, usage and leak rate on all refrigeration equipment.
  • Install, replace, maintain, repair, diagnose and service pneumatic, electronic and electric control systems and related equipment.
  • Participate in the energy conservation program of PCPS by performing scheduled maintenance of designated HVAC equipment.
  • Assist in the development of preventive maintenance programs.
  • Establish and carry out appropriate safe practices at job sites.
  • Performs any other duties that may be assigned by the Superintendent, or designee.

 

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • HVAC Journeyman’s Certificate
  • Universal CFC Certification
  • 5 years’ experience in commercial HVAC trade supplemented by course work in the HVAC field.
  • Skilled in the use of tools and related equipment needed to perform repair, service and diagnoses of HVAC equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable HVAC codes.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints and specifications.
  • Some background in plumbing, electrical and sheet metal work.

 

Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or equivalent

Four years technical training

Apprenticeship training

Knowledge of computer application

 

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of parents or public.

 

Reasoning/Other Abilities

Time management skills and ability to prioritize service calls based on mission impact.  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one-or two-step instructions.  Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables. 

 

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; sit; and use hands to finger, handle, or feel.  The employee is occasionally required to walk; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; climb ladders and stairs on a regular basis and talk or hear.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required include close vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus. 

 

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock, outside weather conditions and vibration.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
