Roof Above is NC’s most comprehensive homeless service provider. Our mission is to unite our community to end homelessness, one life at a time. Focusing on individuals experiencing homelessness, Roof Above offers everything from street outreach to shelter to Rapid Rehousing to Permanent Supportive Housing. Roof Above’s services and programs reach over 1,300 individuals every day across nine campuses in Charlotte. Roof Above was born through the merger of Urban Ministry Center and Men’s Shelter of Charlotte in 2019.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Shelter Manager is responsible for supporting the overall mission of providing a safe shelter environment to homeless men in crisis and offer life-changing services promoting stability, dignity, and trauma-informed services. The Shelter Manager will work a primary work schedule from 4pm – 12am and will serve as front desk operations coverage. During the second shift the Shelter Manager will provide shelter support, roving and assist with security at the low-barrier shelter. The Shelter manager will ensure effective communication across all shifts regarding all activities both verbally and in writing (shift summary) to create continuity of care. The Shelter Manager will supervise the duties of all shelter staff and takes charge of coordinating and supervising daily operations across the shelter campus. This position will address operational needs of the shelter and work collaboratively across teams to facilitate service delivery to guests. Additionally, this position will be responsible for occasionally responding to urgent or emergency situations on the campus outside of the normal working shift.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Actively participates as a team member during their shift, offering guidance and ongoing training to shelter staff.
- Assumes the role of the main point of contact for shelter operations staff inquiries, while appropriately escalating concerns and emergencies to senior leadership.
- Creates and oversees the list of guest chores.
- Conduct quarterly conversations and check-ins with both shift supervisors and shelter specialists
- Coordinates disciplinary measures for shelter staff, including essential documentation, completing write-ups, and managing communication with Human Resources and supervisors concerning staff performance.
- Coordinate coverage for callouts, PTO, and unforeseen absences, and step in for coverage if needed, while ensuring prompt and transparent communication with the Director of Operations.
- Accountable for monthly maintenance of emergency supplies and managing supply requests.
- Attends and engages in regular monthly shelter operation and town hall meetings.
- Supports execution of emergency weather protocols and proactively coordinates supplies and staff for additional guests.
- Collaborates closely with Volunteer Engagement division to coordinate support for onsite volunteer activities.
- Collaborates with Directors of Housing Navigation, Guest Services, Shelter Operations, and Facilities to ensure a positive guest experience and maintain continuity of care for expedited housing placement.
- Oversees and coordinates locker/pod search, excessive property removal and guest property disposal process.
- Conducts daily facility walkthrough to ensure safety and cleanliness of the building interior and exterior.

Qualifications
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
- Bachelor’s degree in health, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, or another relevant Human Services field preferred; High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Four (4) years of experience working directly with individuals with behavioral health conditions or people experiencing homelessness, with a preference for experience in an emergency shelter setting. Clear care and concern for people experiencing homelessness.
- A minimum of three (3) years supervisory experience required.
- CPR, AED, first aid, and naloxone within thirty (30) days of hire. Training will be provided
- Must be proficient in HMIS-Homeless Management Information System. Certification to be completed within 30 days of hire. Training will be provided.
- Evidence of leadership skills, and a preference for experience supervising others
- Evidence of good judgement and ability to make quick decisions. Comfortable setting boundaries with guests.
- Ability to flourish in a hectic work environment and to prioritize competing demands.
- Strong administrative skills and comfort with the use of computers, databases, and technology. Preference for experience using HMIS.
- Strong work ethic and willingness to do a variety of tasks.
- Positive attitude and adept at customer service
- Must possess a valid N.C. driver’s license, clean driving record, and ability to be insured on the agency’s automobile policy. Must be able to drive agency-owned vehicles, including passenger vans.

North Tryon is a 24/7-hour operation which is open 365 days a year.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
The Shelter Manager role entails 4pm -12am shift work from Sunday-Thursday or Tuesday-Saturday, with flexibility needed for potential evening, overnight, weekend shifts, and occasional holiday work. The environment can be fast-paced and demanding. Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods. Ability to be mobile, traverse and move self throughout the worksite.
