JOB SUMMARY:
Requires leadership skills, teaching skills, financial skills, and the ability to write and implement policies. Requires good communication skills with all hospital levels.
Minimum Job Qualifications:
Education:
- The nurse executive possesses a postgraduate degree in nursing or a related field; or the knowledge and skills associated with an advanced degree; or written plan to obtain these qualifications.
Note: A related field may include health care administration or business administration.
Experience:
- 5 years of previous clinical experience in nursing.
- 3 years of management experience in nursing.
License/Certifications:
- RN License in NC.
- BLS Certification.
- ACLS Certification preferred.
- PALS Certification preferred.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assigns duties and coordinates nursing functions.
- Assesses needs of nursing departments in relation to other hospital departments.
- Assesses educational needs of staff. Coordinates inservice programs on educational needs of staff with Education Department.
- Knowledgeable of clinical nursing practice.
- Ensures that nursing care is provided in accordance with North Carolina Nurse Practice Act
- Collaborates with Nursing Leadership Council (NLC) to develop goals and action plans for Nursing Services. Meets with the NLC on a regular basis no less than 20 times per year.
- Holds membership in one professional nursing organization.
- Performs direct patient care activities as needed.
- Participates in the development of budgets, resource allocation, and operational plans in relation to the hospital's mission and strategic plan.
- Supports facility and participates in programs to promote recruitment, retention, development, performance evaluation, and continuing education of nursing staff. Staff turnover less than 18% per year.
- Evaluates current nursing practice and patient care delivery models to improve quality and efficiency of care, and participates in QI program of Hospital.
- Is able to express competency by knowledge of patient needs throughout the life cycle, to include neonate, pediatric, adult and geriatric patients and validates qualifications, knowledge and skills of nursing personnel through established mechanism.
- Develops organization-wide patient care programs, policies and procedures that describe how patients’ nursing care needs or patient populations receiving nursing care are assessed, evaluated and met.
- Is responsible for the establishment, approval and revision of policies, procedures and standards, related to the delivery of nursing care. At least 50% of existing policies reviewed per year.
- Establishes nursing policies and procedures, nursing standards of patient care, standards of nursing practice, and standards to measure, assess and improve patient outcomes.
- Delegate’s authority to members of Nurse Leadership Council, holds them accountable for staffing, patient care issues, and day-to-day operations. Staffing levels contained in productivity system.
- Fosters effective interdepartmental relationships between Nursing and all other departments within the hospital; coordinates the needs of the Nursing departments with those of supporting departments, and plans with the department managers to solve problems related to the welfare of the patients and staff.
- Participates with governing body, management, medical staff and clinical leaders in the organizations decision-making structures and processes.
- Coordinates the facility’s TJC accreditation process.
- Conducts regular TJC Committee meetings to maintain compliance with TJC.
- Is a member of Senior Leadership and has authority/responsibility to speak on behalf of nursing. Attends at least 20 meetings per year.
- Responds to surveys and recommendations from TJC, DFS, and other regulatory agencies in an appropriate and timely manner.
- Participates with leaders from the governing body, management, medical staff and clinical areas in planning, implementing, promoting, reviewing, revising, monitoring, and conducting organization-wide performance improvement activities.
