Position Summary: The purpose of this position is to provide scheduling for the medical staff appointments, and maintaining and updating information in RPMS during patient registration.


Position responsibilities:

  • Determines eligibility of new patients seeking care at NTHS.
  • Interview and interact with patients to make appointments according to provider requests. Maintains, enters, and updates appointment system as needed.
  • Receives and relays incoming and outgoing telephone messages. Receives and directs patients and visitors, answers routine inquiries and makes appropriate referral of questions concerning patient’s condition.
  • Creates and institutes Practice Management appointment system changes.
  • Reviews schedule of medical appointments for accuracy.
  • Scans required eligibility and identification documents into the patient’s chart via VistA Imaging. Followed by the verification of legibility of scanned documents prior to saving them into the appropriate category in VistA Imaging.
  • Interviews patients to maintain and update the patient registration information in RPMS which includes demographic and third party payor information.
  • Obtains signatures for the Patient Services Agreement, which includes information on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Advance Directive information, Assignment of Benefits and Release of Information; Medicare Secondary Payor Questionnaire, etc.
  • Reactivates and updates a patient’s chart in RPMS for those patients whose charts have been inactivated.
  • Collects and scans third party payor cards (i.e. private insurance, Medicare and Medicaid cards). Contacts appropriate insurance carriers and verify third party coverage then accurately enters information into RPMS for use by the Business Office.
  • Ensures patient information is correct and insurance information input is timely.
  • Checks patients in for their appointments at the facility and notifies the appropriate department by sending a router in the RPMS system.
  • Other duties as assigned.



Requirements

Essential skills and experience:

  • Two to three years of Healthcare Facility Patient Benefits/Registration experience.
  • Knowledge of eligibility requirements for services at NTHS to avoid non-eligible individuals seeking health care to access facility services.
  • Knowledge of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the use and proper disclosure of confidential information to protect the privacy of individuals to the fullest extent possible.
  • Knowledge of basic computer applications and use of standard office equipment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of clinic procedures for receiving and following through on patient treatment.
  • Knowledgeable of the various kinds of Medical orders such as medications and diagnostic tests.
  • Problem analysis and problem resolution at both a strategic and functional level.


Valued but not required skills and experience:

  • Associates Degree or Bachelor’s Degree.

Physical Demands: While performing duties of job, employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. Employee must occasionally lift and/ or move up to 25 pounds.


Work Environment: Working in a medical facility means exposure to communicable diseases. Work involves moderate risks or discomforts working around sick, irritant patients.
