Who We Are

Mood is one of the fastest-growing e-commerce companies in the United States. We help people buy the highest quality hemp products online. Our mission is to help people access high-quality, legal, hemp-derived THC products tailored to their use case - from soothing a tired body and to having a fun night with friends. We have a small core team with senior employees from Y Combinator-backed start-ups, SmileDirectClub, and Warby Parker.

It's not our first rodeo - our founders have built and scaled multi-million d2C companies and held key roles at leading start-ups. We care deeply about creating great products, building a world-class team, and creating an environment to do our best work.

Role Summary

We're hiring a Packaging Design Lead to take full ownership of our physical brand expression across product packaging, labeling, retail displays, and more. This role blends creative execution with compliance, operations, and production precision. You'll work cross-functionally to ensure every product we launch not only looks great but meets legal, operational, and brand standards.

This is currently a player-only role with high visibility and strategic impact. You’ll work closely with our Ops, Wholesale, Warehouse, and Supply Chain teams, as well as external printers and vendors.

This position is a FT, hybrid role. You will be required to work from our warehouse in Charlotte, NC, 1-2 days per week.

Responsibilities

Vendor Sourcing

  • Identify and engage potential packaging suppliers based on product requirements, technical capabilities, and business needs
  • Lead the RFP process with shortlisted vendors to evaluate feasibility, cost, timelines, and quality
  • Synthesize proposals and present vendor recommendations to the Director of Operations for final approval
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with sourcing and purchasing stakeholders for input as needed.
  • Ensure that all selected vendors meet performance, compliance, and operational criteria before onboarding

Packaging & Label Design

  • Design and execute packaging, labeling, retail displays, inserts, shippers, and other physical brand assets
  • Translate brand and product strategy into compelling physical experiences
  • Own dielines, layout, typography, and packaging aesthetics from concept through final print production
  • Develop packaging that balances aesthetics, compliance, cost, and feasibility

Regulatory Integration

  • Ensure all designs meet relevant legal and regulatory guidelines (FDA, FTC, DSHEA, cannabis-specific rules)
  • Collaborate with Compliance and Legal to implement required label language, disclaimers, batch IDs, etc.
  • Maintain up-to-date design templates and asset libraries with correct regulatory callouts

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work with the Operations and Warehouse teams on packaging feasibility, shipping constraints, and vendor timelines
  • Liaise with print vendors to review proofs, confirm print specs, troubleshoot issues, and ensure quality
  • Partner with external design studios or freelancers as needed to scale creative output

Production & File Management

  • Prepare final print-ready files and manage version control
  • Conduct regular audits of physical packaging for accuracy, print quality, and brand consistency
  • Keep meticulous design documentation and archive systems

Requirements

Experience

  • 5+ years in packaging and label design, preferably in CPG, food & beverage, supplements, or cannabis
  • Proven experience designing across multiple packaging formats (boxes, bottles, pouches, shippers, displays)
  • Experience working with compliance-heavy products and legal teams
  • Familiarity with packaging materials, print processes, and finishing techniques

Skills

  • Expert in Adobe Creative Suite (especially Illustrator and InDesign)
  • Solid understanding of dielines, CMYK/PMS, embossing, foils, UV coatings, and structural packaging
  • Strong visual design chops with a portfolio that shows clean, elegant, and production-ready work
  • Detail-oriented with exceptional organization and file management skills
  • Ability to operate independently and manage multiple deadlines

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary ($70k—78k)
  • Top-notch healthcare, dental, and vision insurance
  • Unlimited PTO (and yes, you actually get to use it!)
  • 401k with 4% match
  • Other fringe benefits like: free lunch Fridays, quarterly massages, continuing education stipends

The Application Process

  • Please submit your résumé and a link to your portfolio. Applications without a portfolio will not be considered.
  • Next, you'll take a 60m online test to measure cultural fit, attention to detail, and other key traits necessary for success in this position.
  • From there, you'll engage in 1-2 rounds of interviews with the Director of Operations to determine your fit. (And, if all goes well, you'll receive your written offer!)
