Job Description

DEFINITION:

Under the general supervision of the Director of Early Childhood, the Assistant Director of Early Childhood assists in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of high-quality early learning programs for preschool-age students. The Assistant Director provides instructional leadership and supports curriculum development, professional learning, and compliance with state and federal requirements. This position supports staff development, mentoring, and coaching for Early Childhood educators, and helps to ensure a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate environment for all students.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Assistant Director of Early Childhood supports all Early Childhood Education (ECE) programs across the district and works closely with site leaders, teaching staff, classified employees, and families. This role requires an in-depth understanding of developmentally appropriate practices, inclusive learning environments, and the California Department of Education's regulations for early learning. The Assistant Director is expected to demonstrate strong leadership, communication, and collaboration skills in supporting the Director of Early Childhood with the successful operation of the district’s Infant, toddler,  preschool and transitional kindergarten programs.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:

The duties listed are typical, but not exclusive:

  • Assists in the daily oversight and operations of district Early Childhood programs, including Infant, Toddlers, Preschool, Transitional Kindergarten, and State Preschool programs.
  • Provides instructional coaching, mentoring, and guidance to classroom staff including teachers, associate teachers, and instructional aides.
  • Supports the implementation of developmentally appropriate curriculum aligned with state standards and frameworks.
  • Assists with staff professional development planning and delivery in areas such as early literacy, numeracy, social-emotional development, and trauma-informed practices.
  • Supports compliance with state and federal regulations (e.g., DRDP, CPIN, CDE, ECERS, CLASS, QRIS, etc.), and helps monitor data reporting and documentation requirements.
  • Collaborates with families, community partners, and district staff to support student learning and family engagement.
  • Participates in classroom observations and provides feedback and support to enhance instructional practices and classroom environments.
  • Helps coordinate program assessments, including monitoring progress and student outcomes.
  • Assists in onboarding and training new Early Childhood staff and substitutes.
  • Serves as a liaison between Early Childhood staff and district-level departments (e.g., Special Education, Student Services, Nutrition Services, etc.).
  • Provides support with budgeting, purchasing materials, and maintaining compliance with grant and program guidelines.
  • Supports the Director with staffing assignments, schedules, and coverage needs. 
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Educational Leadership, or related field
  • Valid California Child Development Site Supervisor Permit (or higher)
  • Minimum of five (5) years of successful experience in Early Childhood Education, including at least two (2) years in a leadership or coaching role
  • Demonstrated experience in instructional leadership, staff development, and program management
  • CPR/First Aid Certification and Mandated Reporter Training (or willingness to obtain upon hire)
