Kitsap Mental Health Services (KMHS) is hiring a Nurse Supervisor to support and lead our 24/7 nursing teams within inpatient behavioral health programs. This leadership role is responsible for supervising RNs and LPNs, supporting a therapeutic and trauma-informed environment, and overseeing nursing operations to ensure safety, quality, and compliance. Working as part of the KMHS nursing leadership and treatment teams, the Nurse Supervisor helps shape policy, leads training efforts, and promotes excellence in care from admission through discharge. This is an excellent opportunity to make an impact through hands-on mentorship, collaboration, and clinical leadership.

General Summary of Duties:  The Nurse Supervisor provides trauma informed supervision and training for nurses, while overseeing a range of administrative and clinical activities in support of running a safe and therapeutic milieu. The Nurse Supervisor will ensure licensure and training in accordance with KMHS policy as well as associated WACs.  
The Nurse Supervisor will work collaboratively with the nursing team to provide support in carrying out treatment plans and objectives from time of admission to discharge. This individual will assist with improving KMHS operations in support of its stated mission, and provide the highest level of customer service to internal and external customers. The Nurse Supervisor will provide supervision to the KMHS nursing staff as part of the nursing leadership team, as well as participate with the Evaluation and Treatment Center’s management and treatment teams as needed.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Registered Nurses & Licensed Practical Nurses
 
Major Responsibilities/Tasks:
  • Engage with team members and collaborate with the shift supervisors to create, develop and sustain a positive and safe working environment.
  • As a member of the KMHS Management Team, participate in the process of hiring, training, coaching, performance appraisals, disciplinary action, and if necessary, discharge of direct supervisees.  Comply with all agency personnel policies and the KMHS affirmative action program.
  • Work with the Nurse Manager and Medical Systems Director to ensure that safe, ethical, and evidence based practices are being utilized, giving the clients and visitors of KMHS an exceptional, trauma informed, and healing experience. This may require development, revision and implementation of policies and procedures that maintain quality nursing standards and regulatory compliance regarding the following:
    • ordering, storing and utilizing medications
    • utilization of equipment and other nursing supplies
    • medication administration
    • 24/7 physical care responsibilities
    • pharmaceutical and laboratory services
    • adhere to safety standards while monitoring reimbursements and containing costs
  • Communicate with the Nurse Manager on a daily basis to ensure that all tasks are addressed in a timely manner. Participate in a supervision with the Nurse Manager at least two times monthly to discuss pertinent information and foster an exceptional professional relationship that will be exemplary to the nursing team.
  • Support, encourage and implement evidence- based changes while fostering exceptional client care. Model positive and encouraging leadership that will carry through in day- to -day decision making from the management team.
  • Oversee nursing staff schedule management in support of 24- hour services.
  • Participate as a team member in administrative, treatment, staff, training, and supervisory meetings as required including but not limited to Quality Program Reviews, Quality Assurance, Seclusion and Restraint documentation oversight, and 24/7 utilization review.
  • Work diligently to foster open and collaborative communications with all staff as well as other agency departments; IE:  Harrison Medical Center, Salish Behavioral Health Organization, and relevant external agencies to ensure continuity of the agency’s mission statement, treatment philosophies and care for our clients.
  • Supervise the day-to-day clinical operations of 24/7 nursing services.  Provide hands on training and guidance to foster the leadership qualities in all supervisees to ensure competence in their role of registered nurse and licensed practical nurse.  Monitor in-service training for all assigned nursing staff. 
  • Assist in the orientation of nursing students who utilize the department’s units as a practicum site.  Collaborate with the nursing program’s instructor regarding scheduling, program description and in obtaining signed confidentiality statements.
  • Supervise and participate in shift activities including attendance in pass-downs, Treatment Team meetings and clinical discussions for 24/7 units.  Ensure coordination of nursing services with medical providers.  Maintain awareness of activity on the 24/7 units and facilitate continuity of care across disciplines and between shifts according to all recognized department and agency policies and procedures.
  • Monitor the quality of service provided by pharmaceutical and laboratory services. 
  • Provide respect and dignity to all internal and external clients.
  • Ensure the timely and correct recording of all nursing notes via monitoring timeliness reports, medications, vital signs, lab results, physician orders, and other 24/7 nursing treatment issues in patient records.
  • Ensure agency critical incident procedures are followed in a timely and concise manner.  Lead and train staff to ensure debriefings routinely follow critical incidents. 
  • Ensure compliance with the Department of Health Facilities and Services standards of care.  Provide point of contact assistance with on-site audits.  Provide compliance- related correspondence to the Medical Systems Director.
  • Maintain knowledge of proposed and current WISHA/OSHA regulations, coordinate and provide training for staff as required.
  • Disclose limited client information as necessary to the position as trained by the Records Dept. Supervisor. Disclosures must adhere to HIPAA privacy and security standards and be logged in detail according to agency policy and procedures.
  • Complete all required training and annual refreshers.
  • May cover duties as a supervisor and a subordinate as needed.
  • In addition to the above, any other responsibilities appropriate to the position and not specifically listed in the job description.
 
Minimum Qualifications:
EDUCATION: Associates degree in Nursing.
EXPERIENCE: Intermediate (minimum 3 years of job-related experience)
Two years’ experience in one of the following environments: Adult, Adolescent or Child Inpatient Mental Health, and/or Addiction Treatment.  
LICENSURE: Active and unencumbered Registered Nurse license in Washington State.   
Preferred Qualifications:
EDUCATION: Bachelors degree in Nursing.
EXPERIENCE: Specialist (minimum 5 years of job-related experience)
LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION: Certification as Mental Health Professional.

KNOWLEDGE:
  • Maintain a working knowledge and skill in verbal de-escalation skills as outlined in ProAct trainings and other agency-mandated trainings. 
SKILLS:
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other employees, clients, organizations, and the public.
  • Communication ‑ Communicates clearly and concisely. 
ABILITIES:
  • Ability to delegate the non-nursing tasks to support staff.  Coordinate with the shift supervisor for unit safety and other client needs.  
Equipment Operated: Standard office equipment including computers, fax machines, copiers, printers, telephones, etc. 
 
Work Environment: Frequent mobility and/or sitting required for extended periods.
 
Mental/Physical Requirements:  While performing the duties of the job, the employee is required to stand, sit, use hands and fingers, reach with hands and arms, ascend and descend stairs, talk or listen and lift up to 50 pounds. Peripheral vision is also required for this position.
