JOB TITLE: Scene Shop Supervisor
DEPARTMENT: Theatre Arts Department
REPORTS TO: Dean for Arts & Humanities
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
The primary purpose of the Scene Shop Supervisor is to ensure the successful construction and implementation of scenery, props, lighting, projections, and audio for Theatre Arts Department productions, including training and supervising students in construction for theatre technologies.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Constructs stage scenery for theatre department productions with attention to professional stagecraft standards and practices, and according to the designer and director's specifications
- Coordinates lighting, audio, and visual equipment for department events in the Fourth Avenue Black Box Theatre and the Te Paske Theatre.
- Schedules, trains, and supervises student employees in constructing stage scenery, hanging and circuiting theatrical lights, operating sound systems, and theatrical rigging, applying finishes and paint techniques, and fabricating props.
- Acquire the necessary knowledge to safely and effectively complete tasks.
- Reads and interprets plans generated by scenic and lighting designers; generates construction drawings as needed.
- Implements and oversees project timelines for production builds, ensuring deadlines are met and work aligns with design specifications and safety standards.
- Facilitates clear communication and coordination among faculty, student workers, and production team members to support efficient project workflows.
- Maintains a safe and organized Scene Shop environment, enforcing proper use of tools and materials by industry best practices.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Experience in construction/carpentry, creative fabrication, and education/experience in theatre is required.
- Exhibits strong project management skills and works with multiple demands simultaneously.
- Utilizes excellent interpersonal skills to work collaboratively and promote teamwork.
- Ability to supervise and support students in their work as part of their learning experience, with special attention to safety and standard procedures.
- Ability to work flexible hours during and in the days leading up to events.
- Ability to track expenses, generate cost estimates, and work within a fixed budget.
- Knowledge of lighting, sounds, and visual systems, and a willingness to research and adopt new theatre technologies.
