General Notes

Volunteerism & Service-Learning (VSL) is a unit within the Office of the Dean of Students at UT Austin. VSL supports student engagement through service programs that foster community involvement, leadership, and civic learning. This Graduate Assistant position is focused on advising The Community Engagement Collective, with primary emphasis on supporting The Project, UT’s largest day of service.

Purpose

Advise student leaders within The Community Engagement Collective, with a primary focus on planning, community outreach, and stakeholder engagement for The Project, a year-long initiative culminating in a large-scale day of service.

Responsibilities

As part of the Collective advising team, support the operations and learning process of student leaders across all committees in meeting organizational goals.

Provide regular and ongoing guidance to committees designated to plan and execute The Project. Facilitate development of students’ leadership, communication, teamwork, and reflection skills. Support students with knowledge of event planning, volunteer coordination, and customer service.

Take an active role in community outreach for the Collective and The Project, by researching and attending community meetings, learning about the project partner neighborhood, and educating student leaders about findings/connecting them to appropriate partners.

Serve the student committee as the back-up point of contact for community partners; assist in the coordination of ongoing stakeholder meetings with community partners that support The Project and other VSL student-sponsored programs.

Attend weekly Collective general body and committee meetings for The Project, advising assigned committees in the Collective. 

Assist student leaders in managing yearly budgets for their sponsored programs and oversee monetary transactions to ensure compliance.

Assist in the facilitation and evaluation of training workshops for sponsored programs.

Provide logistical support for Collective and AB programming (may include reserving rooms, coordinating workshops/speakers, administering surveys/evaluation tools, and facilitating team building activities, etc.)

Attend weekly Collective-wide and committee meetings, along with weekly VSL staff meetings and monthly Dean of Students staff meetings

Provide support for the VSL’s signature programs, development efforts, and marketing initiatives, including the UT Volunteer Fair, The Project, and the Tower Awards
 

Required Qualifications

Experience, either as a student leader or as professional, planning and implementing service events or other student-led programs

Professional demeanor

Excellent organization and time-management skills

Ability to work in a team-based structure, but carry out work independently

Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills

Must remain in good standing with the university as a Graduate student.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience developing and implementing large-scale student service programs and events

Nonprofit or community organizing experience, specifically in the area of outreach or client/constituent relations

College student advising experience

Bilingual or Multilingua

Salary Range
$19.33 per hour
 

Working Conditions

Typical office environment; Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation; Onsite at the SSB.

Work Shift

20 hours/week

Some student meetings and service events may take place during evenings or weekends. The Graduate Assistant will be expected to attend and provide support for these events as part of the role.
