The Wildland Fire Crew Member (SO) is responsible for assisting the Fuels Crew Module Lead or Engine Module Lead in implementing fuel management projects and responding to emergency incidents. Performs fuels management activities including, but not limited to, creating defensible spaces and shaded fuel breaks on private and public property and implementing prescribed fire projects. Wildland Fire Crew Member will operate a variety of hand and power tools and equipment. Performs professional level wildland fuels management projects for both wildland fire safety and forest health.

The Wildland Fire Crewmember position is an entry-level team member who will work on a fuels module or a wildland engine to complete wildfire risk mitigation projects, including mechanical and prescribed fire projects, and respond to wildland fires for suppression activity. This position will complete the required National Wildfire Coordination Group (NWCG) training and be required to pass a work capacity fitness test in order to obtain an Incident Qualifications Card or “red card” for firefighting work. Work is primarily outdoors in a variety of environmental and landscape conditions. Work is physically demanding and requires hiking on rough and uneven terrain, often for long hours, while operating a variety of hand and power tools. Occasional travel up to two or more weeks may be necessary for fire response. This is a permanent full-time position with the opportunity to receive additional training and certifications for advanced wildland fire positions. The ideal candidate is someone who can work with a team in a variety of settings, enjoys working outdoors, and is highly motivated and shows initiative to achieve project objectives.
- Hiking on rigorous terrain to establish project perimeters, marking trees and locating access points. Using chainsaws, log chokers, chains, ropes and a variety of hand tools to conduct fuels management operations. Operating, transporting, maintaining and troubleshooting machinery including, but not limited to skid steer, woodchipper, trailers and Type 6 engine. Actively engaged in risk mitigation and prescribed fire project work.
- Hiking on rigorous terrain to scout fires, safety zones, escape routes, hazards and establish fire line locations. Using chainsaws, hand tools for establishing control lines. Driving, inspecting, maintaining and troubleshooting fire engines and other heavy equipment. Inspecting, using and maintaining water pumps for use in suppression. Performing firing and burnout operations under supervision. Participating within the incident management level commensurate with complexity.
- Works as a skilled member of a fuels management or engine crew executing fuels management, fire suppression, monitoring, and post-fire activities.
- Other duties as assigned.
The incumbent must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, etc. as necessary. Work may include all hazard and emergency response activities.
Required
- Ability to pass The Work Capacity Test (WCT-Pack Test) as a method for assessing an employee's fitness levels for fire qualifications. Arduous fitness (WCT-Pack Test) will consist of completing a three-mile hike, within 45 minutes, while carrying a 45-pound pack.
Required within 1 year of hire:
- National Wildland Fire Coordinating Group (NWCG): FFT2 and FAL3
- FEMA coursework including ICS-100, IS-700
- First Aid/CPR/AED/TCCC
