POSITION SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Medical Services Coordinator, the Medical/Recreation Driver is responsible for providing safe, reliable, and compassionate transportation services to children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This role supports both medical appointments and recreational outings, ensuring timely arrivals and fostering a positive experience for all passengers. The driver plays a vital role in promoting community integration and access to essential services, while maintaining a high standard of care, safety, and respect for individuals’ unique needs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Safety & Compliance
• Conducts thorough pre-trip inspections to ensure vehicles are in safe operating condition before leaving MSCH property.
• Ensures all safety equipment is properly used, including wheelchair tie-downs and seatbelts.
• Adheres to all applicable traffic laws, speed limits, and MSCH driving policies at all times.
• Follows all procedures and guidelines outlined in the MSCH Driver Certification Handbook.
• Reports any safety concerns, vehicle malfunctions, or hazards to the Medical Services Coordinator promptly, either by phone or by completing and submitting the appropriate documentation or form.
• Reports all accidents, traffic violations, vehicle breakdowns, or emergencies to the Medical Appointment Supervisor immediately.
2. Resident Care & Supervision
• Ensures the health, welfare, supervision, and safety of MSCH residents during transport and while under the driver’s care.
• Provides direct support during appointments and outings, including assistance with mobility, transferring, pushing wheelchairs, and mealtime support as needed.
• Administers medications and assists with hygiene needs during appointments, if authorized and necessary.
3. Scheduling & Transportation
• Follows the medical appointment and recreation outing calendar, ensuring timely pick-ups and drop-offs.
• Plans routes in advance to determine the safest and most efficient travel path.
• Monitors and responds promptly to updates, cancellations, or changes to the appointment and outing schedule.
• Notifies the Medical Services Coordinator immediately of any appointment cancellations or significant changes.
4. Communication & Documentation
• Communicates professionally with medical personnel (e.g., doctors, nurses, office staff) regarding residents’ medical needs and status.
• Relays all relevant medical information to appropriate MSCH staff to ensure continuity of care.
• Maintains effective communication with MSCH team members, including RNs, QIDPs, RCs, and DSPs, regarding appointments and resident care.
• Shares follow-up information such as doctor’s orders and future appointments with the appropriate staff.
• Completes all required documentation accurately and on time, including pre/post-trip inspection forms, mileage logs, and submission of gas and vehicle receipts.
REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Qualifications
• Must be 21 years of age or older.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Must possess a valid California Driver's License, have a minimum of three (3) years of licensed driving experience, and maintain an acceptable driving record as verified by the DMV.
• Ability to pass drug/alcohol screening and criminal background clearance via the California Department of Public Health.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
• Proficient in English (reading, writing, speaking).
• Strong documentation and communication skills.
• Ability to use Therap software.
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team.
Certifications (required or attainable within 90 days of hire)
• CPR certification (maintained throughout employment)
• Medication Administration Certification
• MSCH Driver Certification
Physical Requirements
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs independently and assist with lifting, transferring, and repositioning residents.
• Ability to bend, stoop, squat, crawl, kneel, twist, reach, and grasp while securing tie-downs.
• Must be able to push and pull residents in wheelchairs, including on inclines or declines; wheelchair loads may exceed 100 lbs.
• Ability to climb steps to enter and exit the vehicle.
• Must be able to use hands and fingers to grasp and manipulate tie-downs to secure wheelchairs in the vehicle.
• Frequent walking, standing, bending, kneeling, and reaching.
• Use of mobility aids or lifting equipment as needed.
