About the Department

Brunswick County Public Utilities is currently accepting applications for a Deputy Director – Wastewater Operations to join our Leadership team and assist the Public Utilities Director in the overall administration of development, operation, and maintenance of the County's water and wastewater system with a primary focus on wastewater system operations. Classified as a Grade 4 Collection System and Wastewater Treatment Facility by the NC Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ), Brunswick County Public Utilities provides wastewater (sewer) services to roughly 28,000 retail sewer customers and wholesale customers across a large service area. Our Public Utility team is committed to the community and takes a lot of pride in providing a high level of wastewater collections service to our customers every day.  

The Deputy Director – Wastewater Operations will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operation and maintenance of all Brunswick County wastewater system infrastructure, including:

  • 6 wastewater treatment plants
  • 219 major sewer pump stations
  • the re-use water system
  • the wastewater transmission system
  • multiple gravity, low pressure, and vacuum collection systems
Work involves planning, organizing, and supervising the construction, operation, extension, and maintenance of wastewater operations and facilities to ensure an adequate and efficient process, as well as completing special projects as assigned. 

The Deputy Director – Wastewater Operations will be responsible for managing and supervising the activities of several divisions and functions as determined by the Director, including operators, mechanics, laboratory personnel, electricians, instrumentation technicians, safety personnel, and supervisory personnel. The incumbent is guided by policies and assignments received from the Public Utilities Director but exercises independent judgment in accomplishing the work and developing new programs. The incumbent is held responsible for results and success is measured through reports and program results, as well as economy of operation.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in engineering, biology, or chemistry or an associate degree in engineering technology, water treatment technology, water resources, or related field, AND ten (10) years of experience in the wastewater industry; OR any equivalent combination of training or experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. 

  • Valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver License required.

Physical Requirements
Must be physically able to operate personal computers, related office equipment, and motor vehicle.  Physical demand requirements are for medium work.
