About the Department

An employee in this role is responsible for leading a crew in the maintenance and repair of streets, sidewalks, storm drain systems, and related infrastructure.  Work also involves ensuring crew members take proper tools, equipment, and supplies to the work site and are responsible for work crews and their safety, including properly setting up work zones.  The employee is subject to working in inside and outside environments, including extreme hot and cold weather, day or night, and to work hazards, including loud noise, vibrations, moving mechanical parts, exposure to chemicals, fumes, odors, poor ventilation, and oils.  Hours of operation are Monday-Friday 7:00 AM- 3:30 PM.

Position Duties

Essential Duties and Tasks

  • Supervises and participates in maintenance, repair and construction of streets, storm drainage, sidewalks, and other public infrastructure, and other public works maintenance.
  • Depending on assignment, may supervise and participate in right-of-way maintenance.
  • Coordinates the use of available equipment, materials, and staff to obtain maximum effectiveness and economy; may respond to citizen requests and complaints.
  • Coordinates work with contractors and participates in workflow planning processes.
  • Participates in division employees' training, safety, and performance coaching; ensures application of safety regulations.
  • Completes work orders; ensures crews take necessary materials to work sites.
  • Estimates and orders materials.
  • Participates in snow or ice removal.
  • Operates heavy construction equipment in tight places, requiring care and skill.
  • Serves in the absence of the Supervisor.
  • May perform related work and duties within the scope of this classification.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school with five to seven years of experience in street construction, maintenance, and repair of right-of-way maintenance and repair, including heavy equipment operation experience and some lead worker experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  

Other Qualifications

  • Possessing a valid class “A” commercial North Carolina driver's license.
  • Traffic zone flagging certification.
  • Forklift certification.
  • Right-of-way assignment may require possession of a valid North Carolina Pesticide Operator License.
